The FX5200 lol i remember those!

A good budget card I remember buying a geforce 2 card and thats upped my renegade graphic quite considerably from my onboard graphics, so if your just after a small cheap upgrade i'd recommend the FX5200.

However I did buy a 2nd hand one of these for £25 (and that was a year ago) for my dads computer and the fan makes a really loud noise when it's been on for a while so I'd recommend getting a new one if you can. but I'd say it's definatly not worth spending hundreds of pounds on the latest graphics card if your just playing renegade, as dollar (or pound) per bit of extra performance or graphical improvments it's a waste of money.

I also went form a Geforce 3 Ti 200 to a Geforce 6200 and didn't see any improvements, so save your cash what ever you chose to do. Wink

Edit: the Geforce 2 was a PCI card and the Geforce3 and 6 were AGP cards but i'm now using a standard Nvidia 64 mb Quadro PCI-E card that came with my 1 year old Dell and that does the job as well as the rest too

I know what you're saying Halo38, but i was actually considering upgrading my mobo in the first place. and now that everyone is suggesting it it's kinda drawing me back.

I admit, i'm quite impatient to buy things.

The most appealing mobo was the one i mentioned earlier (the ASUS one), since it had a PCIe slot, 4 DDR slots and it would fit in my case. But apparently only 13 Asus GPUs work in it. So I've looked at other mobos that don't fit in my current case, and the most appealing is this (the first 3 reviews kinda put you off :-/):

ATX Form Factor, 3xPCI-e (x16) slots and 4 DDR2 slots, takes Core 2 Pro CPU's but it's Intel so if you're going for AMD this is not a board for you.

That's not for me, I have a Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott?), and DDR PC3200 ram (not DDR2). Plus it's over £100! That would be more than 1/4 of my budget.

I should get a job.

To my knowlage, that board supports both DDR and DDR2 (DDR = black, DDR2 = yellow), however, the clock speeds are 500+, no less.

But there's another for just over £120 on scan too.
They take the 755 core, prescott and Core 2 Duo. Thumbs Up

Ok just one more question about the FX5200 (i'm not saying I'm buying it, it's just i asked this question a few posts ago and it wasnt answered).

For those who have 256mb card, what FPS do you get playing Ren on high settings?

I'm no graphicas card genius but i'd say from experience that the MB don't really matter, just a marketting ploy, the thing that does effect performance is if your card is a 'high end' model for example

geforce 5200 - cheap <-- low end
geforce 5800 - expensive <-- high end

geforce 6200 - cheap <-- low end
geforce 6800 - expensive <-- high end

some people say that a geforce 5800 is better than a geforce 6200 purly because of it's make up giving it better performance, weather your chosing between a 128 mb or a 512 mb it don't really matter unless your playing extremely demanding games. I've only noticed a drop in performance when using a 32 MB graphics PCI card.

With that patch that Scorpio made, (I think it was him), I remember getting over 100 FPS. This was only in singleplayer mode with little to no action going on besides running around.

Don't take this into consideration though, ever. You may want a card to play Renegade now, but someday you will quit Renegade and want a higher end game, which this card will never run.

I use a 5200FX, it's a pretty good card, I can run most games like Renegade or Half-life 2 well.

Same here, I have had it for years, I need to upgrade Huh

What is x1 for then if not for vg cards. What I don't like is the hypermemory idea. The PCI X1300 looks good, if anyone has it tell me what it's like.

Modems, Ethernet cards etc etc. Maybe some USB expansion cards.

AGP x4/x8 and PCI-e x8/x16 are for graphicas cards since they have more bandwidth to communicate through.
