If it's not too late you can use System Restore to restore before that Windows Update.
If not possible do this:
1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.
2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.
3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.
4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.
5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.
6. Lauch RegEdit.
7. Browse to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
8. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents
9. Reboot Windows XP.
Note: With this method, you may be prompted to install WGA Notifications again which can still be unselected. (You wont have to have it bother you ever again.)
Edit (READ FIRST): I'm reading what danpaul said, now I don't know what AFAIK means, but he says the new updates from this month are all OK. So maybe the WGA of this month is OK too, so you probably do not have to do anything but another Windows Update if you havn't got one already. Not sure if that's what danpaul meant, hope he can confirm.
Only reason why I posted instructions was because he and other people posted that the WGA was the cause, but I never saw a solution posted.
