I wondered about that too. After careful (?) research on the matter, I determined that there's no way to do this. You don't have a repair gun and the engineers don't drop any. Best thing to do is to blow it up with the tank airdropped to you.
HOWEVER, I have not, in the course of the campaign, completed the secondary "Snipe the Engineers" mission and then done the level with the Obelisk, so I don't know if this makes a difference or not.

It makes none, SpyGuy, although if you don't snipe the engineers, you miss out on an Armor-Upgrade medal, which are always nice to have.
I'm working on a walkthrough for the campagin on Commando difficulty on http://www.RenegadeWiki.com, but I havn't had much spare time lately, then I lost all my saves and I'm too lazy to play through the whole thing again.
If anybody finds out, I'd love to know the way to capture to oblisk. I'll put it in there and give credit and what-not...
