	| To find out what kind of ram you need or which you can run we need more information.
First and most important is what motherboard are you using? This is what determines what kind of ram you can run. Also, knowing what CPU you have can also help.

Get as much info as you can on these two things and we can help you figure what ram to use with it.

	| Just looking at the motherboard...P4 Intel E-3600 and it looks like you can add another 256 of PC133. You cannot use the DDR PC2100 or above (won't fit for starters and wrong voltage).
With running Windows XP I would recommend getting at least another 256 PC133 SDRAM. This would help alot if you are serious about keep this system

If I can be frank with your system, it is a little dated but I like the 1.5gHz and with more ram you will just survive until the next game comes out. The video card is dated as well but as anyone will say you can fix anything if you want to throw some $$$ at it.

If you really want to keep it then get another video card like a GF3 or GF4 but the bottle neck will be the ram. You are stuck at 133mHz ram (where PC2100 is 266 mHz) you will notice a significant improvement in gaming with a motherboard that uses DDR ram.

For running renegade, how does it run now? You can get this system to run it with adjusting the settings down and turning off the fancy stuff but if renegade is all you are going to run then get another 256mb of SDRAM PC133 and try and find a good deal on a better video card.

On other games other than Renegade, I wouldn't upgrade this machine and save your money for a new system (unless you were going to use it as a second machine or a backup). You cannot buy accessories like ram and video cards that will all of a sudden play all the latest games. Your limiting factor is the motherboard and ram speed of PC133 - your stuck with it and is getting slower with each new game.

Another idea would be to keep the CPU (especially on a budget) and find a motherboard that takes the P4 1.5gHz. Newer boards will have faster bus speeds that can utilize the faster RAM DDR PC2100. They even make boards that will take either the older SDR PC133 or the DDR style ram - however, my board claims to do both but it seems to dislike the PC133 and I had to buy DDR PC2100 to make it happy so - it's kinda tricky. If you can find a board that does take your PC133 and has slots for the DDR ram then you can still use what you got until you have enough $$$ for new DDR ram.

Just some thoughts, don't know your financial status is so if you got the $$$ buy a new system or keep what you got and spend $30 or $40 for more ram and hope for better improvement. I think you will notice better performance but the question is will it be enough to satisfy you.

	| Also,
The information you posted about your system looks like it came from 3DMark benchmarking software - can you run that program? What was your score?

	| Looking to use this card when you get a new computer (if) I would look at either a GeForce4 (GF4) Ti4400 or the Radeon 9700. I like the nVida based GeForce series better so I would lean towards the Titanium series (the "Ti" in the title). There are newer ones out but there hasn't been much posted yet so a safe bet would be the GF4 Ti4xxx. They can run $100 and I saw a generic after rebate for $80-$90 range.
Which video card was not compatible with your system?

P.S. BF1942 is a BEAR on the finest systems, you might get something playable with the ram and video upgrade but don't hold your breath.

	| Ok i see the different types of video cards.

 AGP or PCI

As well as DDR and SDRAM.

Im guessing I should get the SDRAM version but what about AGP and PCI?

So is it a SDRAM PCI or an SDRAM AGP?

EDIT: Ive got my eye on this one

	| I would rather you get the DDR (double data rate) version for it is faster than the older technology SDR (single data rate). Your current system with this card will perform probably the same (you won't notice a difference) because the ram speed will be the bottleneck, not video card. BUT if (if) you get a new system (with DDR ram) then the SDR version video card will slow you down and be the bottleneck. Think in the future and the card will perform twice as fast as it does now with a new computer
Also, get the AGP version as well. I believe that feature has a faster bus rate than the PCI slots. It also frees up the PCI slots for other cards. PCI video cards are good and there are some that will say they perform just as well but technically, the science says the AGP card should (we're talking about computers being creatures of their own), should perform faster.

You may have to pay a little more for the AGP/DDR version of this card but I think it would be very wise to go this route.

I think I installed it wrong

It's pretty hard to install RAM wrong. In fact with PC133 I believe it's impossible. The RAM only goes in one way and has grooves on the end so it can clamp down. This is the case with most computer parts/cables, they normally ONLY go in one way.

What state do you live in? It may of been static electricty. It actually takes QUITE A BIT of electricty to leave your body before you feel it.

If you can tell me exactly what you did while installing the RAM and exactly what happened when you tried to turn you're PC on I can probably tell you what happened and can probably tell you how to fix it better than most of the people you're bound to run into.

 Questions :
What brand of RAM was it?
 Where did you get it?
Is there low humidty where you live?
Does the floor have carpet by any chance?
Was the power cord connected when you touched the case before installing the RAM?

 I've been troubleshooting pc's for about 10years.

Tips : Don't ever take your shit to Best Buy [etc] 90% of them have no fucking idea what they're doing.

Don't think just cause it's Gateway that they know what they're doing either (concerning technical support). I believe Gateway outsources their technical support. The company I work for use to support Gateway, Compaq and some others. Point being the majority of the time you call someone's 1800 number youre not actually talking to them and THESE PEOPLE as well sometimes have no fucking idea what they'ar talking about.

 Good luck
