A report this week on National Public Radio highlighted a controversial study performed by Oliver Pergams, an assistant professor in biological sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Titled "Nintendo vs. Nature" Pergams' study was recently featured in the Journal of Environmental Management. It asserts that the emergence of video games, the Internet, and other forms of indoor media has a direct correlation with the per capita fall of attendance at US national parks.

Pergams' research was spurred by a per capita decline of attendance at national parks. In 1987, each US citizen took an average of 1.2 trips per person per year to a national park. By 2003, though, that number had fallen to 0.9 trips per person per year. The NPR piece did not mention the fact that, according to the 2000 US Census, the US population increased by over 32 million during the 1990s. It should also be noted the majority of that population growth was in crowded urban areas, many of which are not close to a national park.

Wow, next thing we know games will be blamed for getting people to use bad drugs more. This is one of the stupidest thing I ever heard.

Gee no mention of paying $65 a person for a family of 5 MIGHT be another reason for the decline.

Becareful here. Just because they're associating video games (a long with other types of media) with the decline doesn't mean they are blaming video games.

They are, in fact, correct. As there are more ways to entertain ones self through means that are more exciting that a walk through a park, numbers will fall.

I know, but I am sure that if they did not mention games, this news article would not make it to gamespot, because it would have nothing to do with games. So I think that this was put there to bash video games.

I live within a stone's throw of Wekiwa State Park and the Ocala National Forest. Whenever I can get a chance to visit either, especially for camping at Ocala, I'll take it over sitting in the house any day of the week.

The only type of park near my location is a massive network of boardwalks stretching through the woods for miles. Very Ewok-ish.

However, the local military base and aviation museum attract more tourism/commerce. I think that park will be shut down someday soon.

I love camping and going to the park by my house.

Video games are just everyone's new scapegoat.

I love nature and I love hiking, so if I had the chance to go to a national park, I would. Thumbs Up
