Dover wrote on Thu, 06 July 2006 20:54 | Swearing not being allowed IS a bad thing, because it treats "swear" words differantly than all the other words in the English language, when really they aren't. There's nothing special about the letter arrangement in the word "Shit" that makes it any more threatening than "Hits" or "This" or "Sith". A word is a word is a word, and the only reason people react the way they do to swearing is because they're told to. Newborns and people who don't speak a word of English won't react that way, because there's nothing special or different about them at all.
Making a rule banning cussing makes no more sense to me than a rule that says Crimson wrote on Wed, 12 April 2006 18:48 | ...that no nicknames with the letter "w" can play that day
| because there's absolutely no rationality behind it, other than "I don't like it" or "We have kids here who aren't supposed to be playing anyway". Fucking morons...
As far as the younger audience excuse goes, it's absolute neglegence on behalf of the parents to allow a ten year old to play ANY kind of multiplayer game (Especially a shooter) and expect them not to pick up cussing. If you don't want your kids to have a foul mouth, don't let them play video games online, especially ones that are targeted for an audience much older than they are.
I'm angry now...
|
Unfortunately, the letter arrangement of words DOES make a difference. That's simply how the English language is. We have only so many letters that can be used, so different arrangements are bound to take on different meanings, and such words will be deemed socially acceptable or not.
Certain letter arrangements take on meanings that are not socially acceptable, and are deemed "foul". Simply because it is considered "foul" language, there are barriers in place to prevent the useage of them. Be it right or not, there are some "universal" swear words that are not deemed appropriate to use. The fact that they do not appear in the normal course of human speech also plays to that fact.
Stating that people react badly because they are told to is a moot point. That's the way things are with every form of human interaction. It would be akin to saying that the only reason sexual harassment is bad, is because we are led to believe it. After all, there is nothing special to simply another way of touching someone. Whether it's shaking hands, or grabbing something else, touching is touching, correct?
The problem with your comparison between swearing and the names with "w" is that one has nothing inately wrong about it, and one is deemed universally-socially unacceptable to use.

I'd be more careful using the word "universally" there. I agree that there are times when "bad" language is not suitable (e.g. if one was to appear in court, one probably wouldn't want to swear at the judge). I do not think, however, that leisure time spent on the internet need necessarily be one of those times.
Further, what if I were to become angry during a game of Renegade, and I take your advice insult someone without using "bad" words? While they may not immediately go "OMF U SED FUK MY MUM SEZ TAHTS BAD WURD," my message could--and would very likely--be offensive, as that was its intent. Perhaps a more logical standpoint to take on language in servers would be to look past the words themselves and consider what is being said (admittedly, I wouldn't be much happier if servers kicked for being mean, but it'd at least make more sense). People are offended enough as it is without going out of their way to have a fit when someone says "shit" when they die. It's not really hurting anyone.

Why do we even say it, though? I mean, what does it prove? That you're not happy about dying? I'm pretty sure nobody is, so why do we feel that we should make it publically known? I mean, I do it all the time, too. I always type "fuck" when I die, but getting past the fact that we do it... WHY do we do it? It wastes more time and energy, does it not? It's still not going to stop me from doing it, but it's just an interesting question to think about.
whoa.

The swearing factor is very debatable but, the point is that Moderators ban from IRC with NO PROOF(and possibly because the player being banned is actually better than the moderator)

Universally fits fine. Every culture in the world has some form of socially unacceptance, the internet included, to a few words.

I was told from an 8 yr old kid living in my house it happened and when I confronted the UN member, he told me flat out, even though the kid was running RG, he hacked it and was cheating...keep in mind, this 8 year old is just learning to change his name in MSN...
Same kid different day...he yelled, 'hairy buttcrack'...TWO UN members where jumping all over trying to kick the kid...they kicked the wrong person with a similar name 2 or 3 times they were in such a freenzy to kick the fouth mouthed child...
Sad part is I read the UN Forums, saw them apologizing to the wrong player they kicked because the 8yr was cussing...I called home, woke his mother up at 630 in the morning, PISSED cause he was using my WOL name, FoggyMutt when he did it (They were kicking FoggyC4 I believe)...DEMANDED she storm in that room, uninstall the game IMMEDIATELY and punish him INSTANTLY for pulling that crap on his computer, my serial and my screen name...
Talk about feeling like a fucking retard when I get the IRC script of the cussing...

Universally-socially unacceptable? Is the n00bstories server exempt from society? How about JellyServ? How about ANY other mostly-full renegade server? Outside of Renegade: Almost all Counter-Strike servers don't ban for cussing. Most condone it. Outside of mutliplayer-gaming: Every high school, bar, and on the street. I recently attended a wedding and some of the friendliest people there did a bit of cussing.
It's not "universally unacceptable", it's unacceptable in UN's ivory tower.
If they didn't appear in the normal course of human speech, the UN server wouldn't have a problem, and there wouldn't be a mountain of people who are banned for cussing from their sorry excuse of a server.
Again I ask. What makes the word "Fuck" so special that it's considered "foul" or "a bad word"? It is any worse than "Procreate", "sexual-intercourse", or "baby-making"?

Why do you think that the worse the language, the higher the rating on movies?
I think you are confusing social with private. Social is something that blankets the general ideals of the society. Private deals with individuals. Had I meant places such as n00bstories, the street corner or a naval ship (bad joke), I would have said privately unacceptable. However, because I said socially, I mean socially. Heck even n00bstories will ban for foul language, if it is excessive.
Interesting how you bring up friendly people with swearing, considering the two have nothing to do with one another.

Because bad language should be kept away from little kids, says society. However, Renegade is a game that's rated T. Games that are rated T should not be played by small children. Therefore children have no place on Renegade and the child arguement is null and void.
Thank you for bringing up ratings, though. T = 13+ year olds. PG13 = 13+ year olds. PG13 MOVIES HAVE PLENTY OF CUSSING, but for some odd reason, rated T games can't? Bullshit.
Tell me, warranto, what's the difference between n00bstories and UN, or a street corner and UN, or a navy ship and UN? Why is it okay to cuss in one and not the other? They're all open to the public.
