Zonelabs Zonealarm beats all firewalls

When people ask me "Plz" just because it's shorter than "Please" I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because it's shorter then "Yes"

Really? I have Norton Internet Security '06 and nothing has gotten through.

...although I heard that if you download pr0n, you pretty much sign an agreement to have your AV ignore malware. That's how my friend lost his computer. Laughing

Here you can get Sygate Personal Firewall, no longer in production (as Sygate)
The firewall works fine, I don't know of anything it doesn't block. BlackIce is another great firewall, but you will have to dig deep to find it. Also, I don't think ZoneAlarm is the problem. You should drop IE and get a real browser, turn off javascripts, cookies, and refuse ActiveX installs unless you know the website. Maybe a nice proxy to filter out the bullshit on the fly. This is a good resource for a great piece of software, written by the late Scott R. Lemmon
Here you can find a very fast tool to clean your PC

My family and I have it too, along with Anti-Virus. I'd have to agree with the people who call it utter crap. It doesn't stop a lot of adware and the anti-virus often will detect serious stuff on the computer but refuse to delete it.

Do not take Sygate. I had it and at times it just flipped and blocked all traffic. You'd thiunk simply restarting it would have solved it, but forget it: had to reinstall the whole thing. Took me a while to figure out what was the problem too.

From that moment I have been using zonelabs zonealarm and never had any problems. Sure, sometimes it flips (starts using 99% cpu ) but a simple restart of zonealarm solves that.

Sygate is great for me. I don't have any of those issues with it.

Zone Alarm on the other hand has caused me unending grief.

I concur with Light, works fine for me. Not that I need one behind a router.
I passed every test without my firewall running
Goztow, I don't think Sygate works in DOS mode. You should invest in a fancy new OS like Win95. Maybe a mouse and a speaker. I have an OS that uses the NT Kernel. Makes it difficult for meer mortals to corrupt. he he

Your 3rd real free option is Kerio. I have an older version on my laptop and it's good, but the latest version can get quite annoying.

I disagree there. A router will give you good protection against outside attacks (incoming connections) but any spyware on your system will have free access to the internet if you don't use a firewall to block outgoing connections.

I agree with ZoneAlarm. They may not look so good by their site, and the interface of ZoneAlarm is easy but still maybe less than your expectations. However, I have never had a better firewall than Zone Alarm. I have been using it for quite a while and if you can get what in my eyes is the best as freeware, you should go for it. I recently switch to Zone Alarm Pro and I will never get rid of it.
Additionaly Zone Alarm has won many awards.
> Zone Alarm<

For AntiVirus I have tried many things, even more than what I have tried for Firewalls. What I like most is Anti-Vir, it has never failed me and is simple. Also their search-engine technology is only the best. I get updates on a daily basis, just today I got 4 or more web updates for AntiVir. Also like Zone Alarm, AntiVir is an award winner. Very good software, I would rather have this better free product than have to pay for another anti-virus product.
>AntiVir<

My opinion on Norton, no I don't think it's udder crap. I just think their is better. I am a former norton user and had it on my computer for a long time. The whole time I had it I thought I was safe and wasn't even able to learn alot of all the types of malware and internet threats there are out there.

(The following paragrah is a story and is optional to read)
When the SVK issue occured I ignored it, I then fixed my SVK problem. Then later I have another Renguard problem. "This program has encountered an error and needs to close", I got this after I had using RenIP a few time. I know it was related to RenIP because I have had other problems to Renguard occur in the past related to RenIP. This happened when a bad server port was entered, and I tried to join, due to a server port change. Well then that problem occured 100s of times and would not stop. RG was unusable. I tried everything, from uninstalling RG, uninstalling RG and Ren, uninstalling RG and Ren and deleting the folder cleaning the registry and everything RG and Ren related completle, to reinstalling windows. Everything I tried, I have tried over 2 times. I had no choice to format, or it would result in losing mod powers on some servers and getting kicked from my clan, which both came close to happening.

After the format I had reinstalled Norton and it was screwing up my computer, it was causing a problem. What was happening was that it did not let me log into my user account, as if I didn't have the rights. I had to format again, then I tried a different anti-virus.

------------------------------------
Well as I said I got nothing against Norton it's isn't bad at all, but I would rather have the better freeware products on my computer that I have now than the worser pay service. Even though I need multiple programs than one suite it's much more satisfying, especially because my computer is spyware immune now. ;D (Unless I DL something off the net)

I am protected by Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, Rootkit Revealer as scanners. Now when I say I mean litteraly immune, that means I can't get it! I have SpywareBlaster, I user the Immunizer of Spybot S&D, I browse with Firefox and use the extensions Adblock Plus, Adblock Filterset.G Updator and NoScript.

Have not gotten a single thing found in my spyware scan results with all my scanners.

Did I just take this off topic? Yes I did! No but seriously, I have learned how to make the best of the web when it comes to surfing, my browser, and keeping myself immune and safe. Considering the fact for the last 2 years I have not gone to school and have stayed home all day on the computer. Yep, for 2 years, since 9th grade. I learned alot, recently about all the cool extensions that are of great use in Firefox ;D.

Edit: Here is more spam!!!!!!!!!!@@@@@!!!@$$$!!!!

Zone Alarm, even the free version plus a Linksys Router is about the best security a home user can get...security suites, and even Zone Alarm now, protects against a lot of other things as well.

If it's spyware, malware, whatever else...Windows Defender is becoming top dog...why? (They built the OS so they know more secrets than others)

Firewall...Zone Alarm was the first to start program control...that's the most important aspect of ANY firewall...Norton does a decent job now a days, but users don't like 50 pop ups and confirmations...Black Ice and McAfee and a few others are also pretty good...but I have yet to hear or read another program go one on one against Zone Alarm (as far as firewall tests) and beat it...and that's the free version mind you. Paid version gets you a lot more bells and whistles, but for 20 bucks more a McAfee or Norton all in one suite may suit ya better, but I'll never switch personally from Zone Alarm anytime soon. I also get to use a free version of Symantec Corperate Edition so why get a memory hogging suite that I don't need?!?!

Virus protection...it truely does NOT matter which...each one on a different day does better as they release the defintions first...Trend Micro, McAfee, Symantec, Panda, etc etc etc...just have one...the more free the better generally...which ever one meets your needs for updates...the better...

My personal network, with the exception of exceptions I manually enter into my linksys router for FTP and other things...has never recieved ONE inside alert passed the router...meaning no KNOWN attackers have even challenged Zone Alarm on the inside...travelling yeah...cause then Zone Alarm is on the perimeter, but that's expected...plus on new linksys firewalls you can enable firewall protection meaning the router will only let machines from the inside get out if it's firewall is working...in other words, a dead firewall program on a computer will not be able to get exposed to the internet...not a bad deal...

Any persons main worry should be web bots...malware, spyware, 99% of virus's are just pains in the ass....web bots and losing control of your computer should be your main concern...

Some good reading... http://www.grc.com/default.htm

Where did you find it? I looked for it several times, but I always get off track.

I agree Light, I use sygate at the local machine. Although, it's really just to keep Micro $oftware from calling home. No, It's just to make it more difficult. I had to let the validation shitware they slipped in on an update to contact their network. Customers have raised so much hell they stopped it about as fast as it started.

Merovingian,
I wouldn't waist to much time on a firewall. A good web browser, mail client and maybe FTP server is more important. Good safety habits are also more important. Doesn't matter how good the lock is, if you just open the door anyway.

Can ZoneAlarm:
  • Detect when one program attempts to use another program to access the internet
  • Detect that a program has changed since it was allowed access (i.e. been patched)

The last version I used couldn't. TBH ZA is fine for someone who doesn't want all the technical details thrown in their face, but it's not for me.

I call Bullshit. Personally I prefer F-Secure, but I run AVG (and BitDefender) because F-Secure costs.

There are no really good free firewalls.

Sygate is no longer being updated so the attack signatures will never contain information about newer attacks and any vulnerabilities for it will never be fixed.

Kerio free is useless, I had it set to the highest settings and it couldn't even manage to block a simple port scan with nmap.

Jetico has good outbound protection but it is very buggy.

Zone Alarm free is very basic and I found I could not get it configured how I wanted it.

I would reccomend purchasing Outpost or if you prefer Tiny firewall. Do not make your decision based off only this thread, do a bit more research, download trials, run tests and see what meets your needs and offers the protection you want.

For anti-virus my prefernece is antivir classic(free).
For anti-malware/spyware/adware I use Windows Defender and I also do scans with Ewido, a2 free and ad-aware.

As someone else stated the biggest security risk is the user, if you use good habits you will never get infected with anything. Stay away from warez, porno and sites offering free screensavers and emotes and other stuff like that. Be very careful what you download(including emails). And of course use Opera or Firefox or an addon for IE to make it more secure(or IE 7).

One of the big brittish ones Razz

I would consider a good FTP and mail software when i got my new system which will be a host of a small network but this is the only "decent" system in the house. I am currently behind a netgear router (i tryed linksys but it wouldent let teamspeak through it) and i have Avast! AV and Lavasoft Ad-aware SE which scans the 280gb every month. I have Mozilla Firefox as my browser since IE got slower and slower. The reason i am looking for a decent firewall is because im in the modelling industry and have alot of very valuble data on my HDD's.

I will try Zone Alarm since many users here have had it and it hasnt let them down, for all they know...

Thank again, Merovingian
