Too bad Mr Pirate is banned from most servers running pure mode...
Anyway, as long as the CP2 installation doesn't guarantee to work 100 % of the time for everyone, it shouldn't be done anyway.
CP1 and CP2 certainly have some advantages though. Most of the things you say you don't like are server side, not client side.

Ok, ok. Enough with the arguments already, please. I belive that everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the game, online resources and XWIS, but i don't belive that bickering over it will solve anything.
You don't necciserally have to use CP1 or 2 (i don't and i still use the faster loading scripts). I do like the music, although, players that don't can spend about 30 seconds of their time to turn it down in the options. The only requirement to play online is the updater 1.037 patch, thats it and i belive that if other people want to play other maps, they can dedicate their own time to downloading them and hosting non-dedicated server's to this matter.
Renegade is currently downloadable (from several sources and some P2P sources too) and there is a no-cd crack for it, so you no longer require to buy the disk. I belive that we should come together as a community and work things out. If XWIS canno't be botherd to host for renegade anymore, thats their choice and we have no effect in that, but, we can still use our own minds and resources to keep the game running. I know a game's developer that went through 4 third party companies before they forgot about it and there is still a small community for that game after 7 years.
If you care about this game, even just a small amount, take this infomation into your heads and think about it, sensibly, please.

A forced map pack patch would be the best thing to happen to this game in a while.

CP2 is nice, and I'm personally glad I got it, but it shouldn't at all be mandated. The same for mappacks, though it would be nice to see more variety on servers.
Quite simply, if a person doesn't want something, they shouldn't NEED to get it. I want to play Renegade, therefore I have it. I want the faster load times, maps, etc. therefore I have them.
"hey wtf if u want to play renegade ull be FORCED to download/buy the game"
Of note is the fact that we HAVE Renegade already. Just because we had to buy/dl Renegade because we wanted to play it doesn't mean that we have to dl some mappack that we DON'T want.
And please, for the love of all that is, try and put a little more effort toward legibility.

Honestly, I think Renegade was more fun before all the stupid bullshit that most servers run was around. I enjoy Renegade in its pure form, and I don't think I should have to download CP2 just so your newbie-ass server's mod to make everyone in the tunnels stealth can work. Sorry.
|
I couldnt have said it better. I have been playing this game since the release and thats probably why I see it this why too.
like the game without modifications. I don't even use skins or reticles of any kind. (it's ok to use them for the change and to make a vehicle/character look nicer but some out there really give a advantage.) But the godcrate, stealth crate all that changing stuff. It just makes this game suck.
And yes I do stand open for new things. I have tried skins back in the days, I tried new maps/modifications.
But some people just like the game the way it is (true form)
I do play new maps. And then I notice that some maps are not really good for Renegade and some are. Therefore I think that new maps would be a nice add. If there was to be group to select the right maps. Because C&C Glacier (Bug wise) is worse then most fan maps out there and most servers don't have it in there rotation.
As for the loading time. If you have a 512MB ram this game will load in 1/3 sec. After the first map whichs loads slow. Most people now a days have 1024 some even more.. and with a 256MB it loading time is decent.

It's really hard for a server that hosts fanmaps to get those in the rotation as it is today. CP-maps works more or less but other maps...
We tried adding River Canyon and the server would go almost empty every time it showed up allthough we had an auto announcement and put it in the motd.
An obligatory map pack download could solve this but the real solution would be that player who are joining in automatically download the map for that server, just like it is done for other games. However, I suspect this isn't possible for Renegade, it would have been done otherwise.

Totally agree.
How about having a message when you logon offering players the chance to download a map pack ? It isn't something you would be forced to do. It would be ideal for those who do want the chance to play new maps and get the option when they logon Renegade to download them, like they do with the patch. For the rest who choose to play the same maps with no variation, and play them by choice, they get their wish too.

I'm not sure if that would be practical with Westwood's (somewhat limited) update system. Offering the maps in the form of an "update" would probably be the best way to ensure everyone gets them.

Yeah a update with some new maps would be nice. Besides a map doesn't change the game it just add's something up. Like glacier flying its still up to the server owner to run the map or not. And I'm sure noone minds a new map.
The question is can XWIS get acces to those servers? And then you would need a team to test the maps. on the following.
- is it playable?
- Wil it be balanced
- not to big off a download
