Well, if this article is true, then it makes perfect sense why EA's 'games' suck.

In belgium we have about the same situation with a company called Inbev situated in Leuven, near Brussels. They control about 75% of the market(beer) so they do as they please. Thier policy is;

1. decrease quality to cut expens
2. Fire 2/3 of staff

and our ministers just sit back and watch. There have been protest and strikes but none seemed to have any effect.
