Is there any point to debating politics/hot issues?

Have you ever changed someone views/opinions on a topic in this forum by debating?

What I'm getting at is that you can post things on a forum about someone wanting to ban violent games or Canada or drugs or politics or whatever, and people can debate/argue about it with other people all they want too, but I don't think anyone ever gets their views changed by the other people on this forum. Have you ever heard someone say something like, "Oh, I changed my mind and decided that you are right about this and I was wrong."

Any thoughts on the reason to debate on a forum like this? The only ones I can think of, is that you get some entertainment out of it, and you might learn piece of news or so.

Changing one's opinion is one of the main reasons to debate but it rarely happens, not just here but everywhere else as well. Politicians debate about various issues but their opinions don't change that much.

What debating does is that it exposes the issue and 'fills in the whole picture'.

And besides I couldn't imagine how boring these forums would be without debates and/or flaming. Big Grin

I wouldn't call this a debate forum...just a forum. People pipe up with various viewpoints on whatever the issue of the day is, and other people give their viewpoints on those viewpoints. At best, you can learn a little about how the "other side" (as if there were only two) thinks...at worst, it's just a bunch of ignorant twits giving each other a well-deserved tongue-lashing.

There were once attempts to regulate politically/emotionally charged topics- but they failed, as they do on every online forum for a game that has already been discussed into the ground. If you don't like reading it, don't.

Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.

Debate saves you from being close minded.

Basicly yes, you debate to learn the opnions of others. I have had my mind changed before though.

"Don't try to be a great man, just be a man. Let history make it's own judgments."

"Maybe its not the destination that matters, but the journey."

"How many people does it take before its wrong? A thousand? Fifty thousand? A million?"

"Im not here to tell you how it is going to end, Im here to tell you how it is going to begin."

"Its not the end or even the beggining of the end, mearly the end of the beggining."

"Logic is the beginning of wisdom; not the end."

Besides, arguing can be fun and is often a great way to pass the time.
