Quote:

Republican primary candidate wants to eliminate property taxes by heavily taxing games the government deems "violent."

Though incumbent Governor Rick Perry is almost assured to win the Republican nomination for this year's gubernatorial election in Texas, he does face three longshot challengers. One of them, Corpus Christi rancher Star Locke, has proposed eliminating property taxes in the Lone Star State with revenue from taxing three things he finds undesirable. Specifically, Locke is proposing a $10,000 per-abortion tax on medical clinics that perform abortions and a 10 percent tax on all sodas containing sugar.

However, gamers will be especially alarmed by the third part of Locke's property-tax-relief proposal--a 50 percent tax on "violent video games." "I take the position that the Founding Fathers took: that the power to tax is the power to destroy," he told the Amarillo Globe News. "So our concept is that we need to tax things we don't want and you want to not tax things that you want to encourage."

However, in the unlikely event he is sent to the governor's mansion, Locke would create a 10-member board that label games are violent. The tax itself would be levied against the publishers of said games--and quickly. "Once it's reviewed, the tax would be levied swiftly," he said.

What do you think of that? I find this even more <not sure what word to use> than the thing about Hot Cofee mod.

What a dumbass. Yeah the founding fathers were all for unjust taxation right? They were so happy about the stamp act.

Politicians are getting way out of hand with violence in video games. Both Republican and Democrat. What crock of shit.

I don't agree with abortions, but this is basically federal income at the expense of someone's death. This particular Republican politician is an idiot.

for some reason I foree the Black Market gaming community will love this. The same with out-of-state game stores. No one will buy the games if they are taxed that much, or the game companies will not bother to sell them in that state.

I guess that means Canada may become the "Game Outlet of America" soon. Assuming you can smuggle them back accross the border.

Considering how many people play video games these days I don't see this going into effect. The video game market is absolutely huge and by putting a massive tax on this it's sure to cause some kind of major opposition. Who knows? This kind of proposal may even prevent this guy from even having a shot at the Govoners seat now.

It's not that we don't care; it's that this guy's chances of getting elected and this tax actually going through are so slim to none that we aren't worried too much about it.

What if tetris was a game where you were throwing bodies into a well in certain configurations and they were trying to climb on each other to reach the top and if they did then you lose but if you get them pressed in tightly enough at the bottom the poison gas you have in the well causes them to die.

I wouldn't call the British surtaxes unfair, considering you went to war with a French colony (New France specifically) without the authorization of Great Britain just to get new territories, leading to a somewhat long war between the two countries.

You wanted new territories? Fine, but pay the bill.

In my opinion, video games aren't any issue, nor is the abusive consummation of soft drinks... But parents, parents who can't even seem to be able to take care of their kids correctly anymore. If you want to raise a fucking family do it right, educate your child(ren) correctly, teach him/them the right values.

Nowadays most form of governments are like: "Well, parents won't do their jobs maybe we should", which is probably the worst mentality ever, and I think you can understand why.
Say, I give you a job which consists of 3 tasks, but you can't do one correctly, what should I do? Do it for you or educate you so you can execute it in a proper manner? Answer #2 obviously.

Making people pay $60 bucks for said "violent games" games rather than $40 isn't going to change much, people will just buy less... And since all of this is limited to one state, it doubt it will really affect the industry. :\

And a thing about abortion is, it shouldn't be seen as a method of contraception (some people see it like that), but rather as a "final solution".

Warranto: Games tend to cost more here than they do in the U.S.

Indeed, specially in Ontario. In here if a game price is 60 CAN(59 is more likely) then the actual price is 60*1.15=70 CAN.

Not everything is as it appears
Untouchable
All that would do is hurt the stores in that state. There is this thing called the internet (you may have heard of it or even used it before!) where you can buy things and get around ALL the taxes. There is also snail mail which also allows you to buy stuff out of state and a state line where stupid laws/ideas/taxation go away. And wtf is wrong with soda? Who does this guy think he is that he can tell me what is undersirable??? The only thing I see undesirable in that article is the fact that anyone would vote for someone that functionally retarded ...

Heh, if there is a 50% tax on them, I'm sure that the prices up here will seem cheap.
