I have never been able to answer one riddle in my life.

Ever read the Hobbit? Actually, here's one for you: ... Screw it, the assholes on these forums would answer it if it was public. Check your inbox, I've got a few for you. They're easy.

A vowel? A E I O U?

Going with the "I am the alpha and omega"

Specifically A. It may be a single Letter, since there are "four others of my kind"

I was going to say either the letter Y, since it is SOMETIMES a vowel, but that would make it a group of 6, not of 5. And I'd have to murder warranto for the puns.

My other guess would have been the question, "Why?" It fits in with everything EXCEPT the group of 5 bit. However, if you are willing to exclude "How?" (as it does not begin with the letter W), it fits perfectly. That would make "Why?" the REASON behind everything.

I am the Alpha and Omega of all that is, has been, and is yet to come; "Why?" as the meaning of existence.

With a single utterance of my name, I can successfully challenge all things Religious and Scientific; "Why" as a demand for proof.

With one whisper of me, people have felled entire Kingdoms and entire Governments; "Why?" as dissent and dissatisfaction.

I am feared by all, yet all will use me willingly; "Why?" as the reason for an act; nobody likes to explain their own actions yet always demands to know the reasons behind the way others act.

I have been given an honourary place among four others of my kind. Among the "Big W" questions, "Why?" is the odd one out- the other questions ask for quantifiable data while "Why?" asks for the undefinable. However, there are 6 W's in total, if you count "How?" so this could be a problem.

So, how wrong am I?

Congrats!

The answer IS "why".

I am the Alpha and the Omega of all that is, has been, and is yet to come

Why are we doing it this way, why not some other way? <-- this ends the previous, and begins the new.

With a single utterance of my name, I can successfully challenge all things Religious and Scientific

Why does this do what it does? Why do you believe in a god that...

With one whisper of me, people have felled entire Kingdoms and entire Governments

Why do we have to put up with this?

I am feared by all, yet all will use me willingly
Why does this work the way it does? "Next question, please."

I have been given an honourary place among four others of my kind

Who, What, When, Where, and Why. "how" is not really counted in that specific group, so I wasn't counting it here. "Why" is also the most difficult of the questions to answer, hence the "honourary" place.

Though I'm thinking I may have to refraise that part if people tend to have a problem with it.

Well to me, the part that doesn't seem to fit right is the first line.

You made this yourself, then... Nice. Thumbs Up

Nice riddle! Very Happy Although, in my opinion, the "feared by all" part is not entirely correct, there are many people who are intriqued by the question, and devote their lives to answering them and asking new "why"'s.

There's a hole in the sky through which things can fly.

Heh, but even then I'm sure there are a few "why"s that they don't try for. Good point to make though (as I'm one of those few that want to know all the "why"s)

The problem with "the five W's" is that while "how" isn't one of them, it's actually the most important one. Without knowing how something is done, your mind won't push forward your knowledge substantially. Goes along with giving a man a fish vs teaching a man to fish.

oh, and I agree. However, it is called the "Five W's' for a reason. Infact, "How", "Do" and "Did" also fall under the same category. The "Five W's" still get all the glory.

Yeah that part was what confused me because technically, "who, what, when, where, how" isn't a group of anything. There is no "4 Ws" apart from that they sound good when read in that order, because there are more "wh" words that are also interrogative words (which is the only real thing the list has in common), such as "which", "whence", "whither". Also, the "4 Ws" with or without "how" are not all members of the same group of interrogative words either. The only group of those which has 4 members would be interrogative pronouns I think, which is "who, whom, what, which".

I'm glad it wasn't "Y." I really would have had to murder you for pulling a pun that lame. Big Grin

The "5 W's" is a group that refers to what words always begin a question, as well as what questions asked in order to find out information from people. (for those who know of it, think of the CTV show "W-Five")

"How" is never introduced, even during school when you are first introduced to this group.

Though you are correct. "who, what, when, where, how" isn't a group of anything. Hence why I said it was part of a group of 5, being "who, what, when, where, and why". That is the group of 5 that we all know about.

"How?" being a derivative question, a combination of inquiries rooted in the other 5. Still, every teacher I've ever had has lumped it in, so that threw me a little at first.

I still think the Banstick or the BFG-9000 would work just as well, though. Razz
