You don't have to make bones.
And I don't think RenHelp has any good tutorials, but I just did it using the WS's doc in the "HowTo" folder. So I'd start there.

He should have said "RenHelp doesn't have any good tutorials for boning characters except the official Westwood ones". RenHelp has lots of great information that will help you bone vehicles and do lots of other things.
