how many servers did you actually try to get in? sometimes it gives version mismatch if it didnt login properly, try logging in to WOL/XWIS and then logging out again, and the login again.

You should make sure you are asked for username/pw AND get the MOTD on entering the server browser. otherwise the login probably didnt work properly.

could just be a dirty laser, misaligned laser or just wear and tear on the CD drive, or it could be something else entirely...

You can replace a cd-rom drive without having to replace your whole pc... A normal CD-writer - DVD-reader combo should cost you about 60 € nowadays, I think. A DVD-writer a bit more towards 120 €.

BTW: P4 2.4 in 2001? That is AMAZING Surprised

loading a game does not need to read the cd much, installing it requires the cd to be read in much more detail, and is when something like a misaligned laser would cause problems.

When you load a game all it really does is look at the cd and ask itself, is this the CD I am looking for or not
