No firewall can stop this sort of attack. The incoming packets overwhelmed the server. Imagine putting a bowling ball underwater, then put the straw on the bowling ball and try to get water through the straw. You can't get much, if any. There are various ways to stop this sort of attack, but Sprint in this case null-routed the IP for n00bstories so my web host could be back online.
I'm the bawss.
