The n00bstories AOW Server will have its ban list backed up and wiped out. Banned for the wrong reasons? Realized the error of your ways? Your past mistakes will be forgotten tonight (Pacific Time US) and everyone will be allowed to play. Since the server has been running for about two years, the list is getting a bit outdated, so we will be lifting the over 600 bans in the system. Come join us!

I'm the bawss.

Wow, I'm going to be unbanned from n00bstories? I hope they have blankets in hell, because it's going to be cold.

Since late 2004 I think... I corrected a mod's grammar and then swore at him when he got mad at me. Or something like that; it's been a while, I don't remember exactly.

EDIT: Corrected my own grammar.

this is really just another way of saying that the server needs players.

OK, I have wiped the list.

Yes, you're right. I do need players. You want to know why? Some moron decided that he'd scan my server every few minutes, and whenever I hit 10 players, he'd use a WOL exploit against the server and down it went. That sort of thing is exactly what killed the Pits, and I didn't want to follow the same fate. I have fixed the exploit from working on my server, and this little gimmick is an attempt to get people back on my server.

Furthermore, many of the bans in there were the result of moderator abuse and various garbage that has piled up over the 2+ years of existence of the server. Hence, people need to be given a second chance.

Please, kill me now. Roll Eyes

You could have went through the names and leave some of the more-known cheaters?

I believe in once a cheater, always a cheater... Therefor you probably shouldn't just blanket you list. You could have looked at the reasons. Every reason that is not "final renegade" could have been considered of being blanket...

But it's your server. I guess your mods will just have much more work during the coming days/weeks.

I have no problem with banning them again if the situation calls for it.

Small little suggestion: lift all the bans, but put the server in Full RG mode. Half-RG doesn't always stop the asshats before they manage to ruin a game.

Are you or BHS planning on releasing the fix for other servers?

Planning? Yes. I have a few things I want to add and refine before I release it. Plus, it's based off v00d00's code, so I don't want to just release it without his permission.

I'm also pondering a move to PHP for it which would give me significantly more power and less overhead than mIRC. (since my skills are not quite expert level)

Nah, why would we do that?
Actually, i agree with Goztow, you should look through 50-100 at a time, find the people that needed a ban, and keep them banned. More than likely, your gonna come up with about 90. This is a way to keep out the hackers, while allowing the people that were unjustly banned to continue to play.

Did you modify v00d00s WOL proxy ? Wink

When people ask me "Plz" just because it's shorter than "Please" I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because it's shorter then "Yes"

I actually doubt the real cheaters, from 2 years back are still active cheaters at this moment.

So unbanning people shouldn't really cause that much trouble.
