You don't need to release the source, it is possible to edit the map and modify it regardless of having the source files.
Whether or not this is ethical or against copyrite law I do not know, but I do know it is not neccessary for you to release the source.
And out of curiosity, is there any particular reason you will not release the source for it? You have released many other files, some of which did not actually belong to you but was given to you by Westwood staff. I am just intrigued :/

You can't edit the source level file at all. That is impossible because it isn't released, there is nothing that can turn a compiled level file back into a .lvl file again.
