Changing your ip address and DHCP server problem? [message #162721] Fri, 08 July 2005 14:55 Go to next message

I am on a home network, my parents computer on a router, and mine on a wireless PCI card. I read in the help manual that the DHCP server assigns all computers on the network an ip address. Recently, my ip address has been changed causing me to have no access to our home network, thus, the internet. I can connect to the network, however, I get a error: "Wireless network has limited or no connectivity" and on my adaptor monitor program I get the error: "You have successfully connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found". Since my ip address has changed all this commotion has occured. I am guessing that since my ip address is changed, the one the DHCP server assigned me is no longer any good. I have read all our help manuals, and tried everything in our router configuration. Nothing works. We tried setting up the network all over again, which did not work either. Is there a way to change my new ip address back to the old ip address that the DHCP server assigned to my computer? Or is there a utility I need to be using? Help is greatly appreciated on this topic. Thanks.

the new ip address will have been given by the DHCP

since you are using a home network i suggest you just set the computers on the network manually instead of using DHCP, its easier when forwarding ports etc..

What has probably happened is the new ip assigned does not fall in the range allowed for you home network by the firewall or router...

When we first set up the network, I am pretty sure all the computers were set up manually. The DHCP server has not assigned my computer a new ip address, I looked on the list of computers on the network and mine is not even listed. I don't know what to do first. My question now is, how do I get the DHCP server to assign my computer a new address? Do I have to add my computer to the network again? I am not a big fan of home networking and am not to good with it.

i suggest you unplug your wireless router / access point and wait a minute before plugging it back in, they can sometimes freeze up and stop working. Mine has to be reset like this once every 4 months or so usually.

I have tried many things in ipconfig such as ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /registerdns, I don't really know what else I can do. In my router configuration, I have the DHCP server enabled, but when I do ipconfig /displaydns it shows that DHCP is not enabled. I am trying everything to get my parents pc to assign mine an ip, but nothing is working so far. I am pretty sure it has to do with DHCP but am not sure.

Can the problem computer 'see' any other computers?

Also check windows firewall is either turned off (recommended as long as you have another firewall) or set to allow your computers ip address. Windows Firewall has a nasty habit of turning itself back on....

Our router actually has a firewall, I will get right on that and check that. Also, my parents pc has a firewall from Kasperki or something like that. I am not sure if there Windows firewall is on or off. I will check all three. However, the Kasperki firewall does not have anything that has ipbans or trusted ips. It is one horrible firewall. But I did turn it off and I still could not connect. I will check the Windows and Router firewall and get back to you.

It is not the firewalls getting in the way. Now, I am left clueless.

IP Address is assigned according to the MAC Address. Thus, if the MAC Address is changed, the IP address changes.

Try changing the MAC Address. Have a little fiddle with that.. I'm sure your used to fiddling with little things now, seeing as it looks like you've hit puberty..

Well, I found out what my mac address is. I don't know how to change it. Is there a way to find out my ip using my mac address?

I fixed the problem. I reset the router to the default settings and restarted it. The configuration was all corrupted. Now, it would be nice if it had internet. Our router can't get to the internet. Dunno if it's our ISP or not. But atleast I have connectivity to the network again.
