TOWSON -- Sandra O'Connor, Baltimore County's state's attorney for more than three decades, has said she will retire, her office said Wednesday.
A Republican, O'Connor said she would retire in December 2006 when her eighth term ends, according to a release from Baltimore County State's Attorney's office.

O'Connor has been both criticized and praised for her aggressive use of the death penalty.
In a study of Maryland's death penalty released in January last year, University of Maryland professor Raymond Paternoster found that prosecutors in jurisdictions such as Baltimore County are more likely to seek capital punishment than counterparts in other jurisdictions, even when circumstances are similar. O'Connor has said her policy is to seek the death penalty in every case that meets the criteria established by state law -- an approach her supporters believe ensures fairness.
O'Connor grew up in Catonsville and obtained her law degree at Indiana University School of Law, according to a biography on the office Web site.
She worked eight years as a city prosecutor before beginning her 32-year reign as Baltimore County State's Attorney in 1974. She is the longest-serving prosecutor in the state.
