...for someone whose only book they ever enjoyed reading past the halfway mark is 1984?

It Can't Happen Here, another book in the spirit of 1984, which I thought was quite an excellent book as well.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

Da Vinci Code.

Hear hear. While only most of the book is rooted in truth, I think it's the kind of book that people should read and at least have knowledge from.

If you find your beliefs changed, look further into the backstory. The Council Nicea (sp) for example, was indeed interesting.

I must admit, however, I find the rest of Dan Brown's books tedious at worst, a breeze through at best. They didn't grab me, and the reading was passive - what I mean to say is that it didn't engage my mind.

The Catcher in the Rye is a must. It's a short read, but a really great book. I expect a LOT of the people here have read it, but if you haven't, do so.

Reading Level?

Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen

Its a middle school book, and im a grown man now but i still say its my favorite.

Hell anything by him is good.

Hatchet - Just about every school in the US has this book as a mandatory read. To be honest i never had an intrest in books until the school forced me to read this.

Brians Return - A sequel to hatchet, Brian returns to the canadian wilderness.

Brians Winter - A Continuation of Hatchet. What would have been if Brian wasnt rescued.

Transall Saga - A boy running across the desert is sent to a unknown world from a mysterious high energy blue light.

Soldiers Heart - Oh man this is a good one, the life of a civil war soldier, this one was so intense i was sweating in class while reading it.

The Car - A younge man builds a car from a kit to go see his uncle.

Dog Song - Cant really remeber too much, but its really good, non-the less

The Island - After a teenager is moved to far away to his new home, he copes with life and makes a small island his own. <-- Really good one

The River - Another Sequel to hatchet Smile

Winterdance - More of an adult book, about the iditerod (<- god knows that isnt spelled right) race in alaska

Woodsong - Really good one, thoug i read it after Dogsong and cant really remeber it either.

Life of Pi. This is my favorite book, ever. And I read a good deal. Dune used to be my favorite until I read this. You can't put it down.

All of the dune books - not too sure about prelude to dune though.

All of discworld by Terry Pratchett

The first 3 dark tower books by stephen king, and then stop.

Manhattan is my beat by Jeffrey Deaver . then continue on threw.

Catch 22 - by Joseph Heller because Yossiarian lives! And then Closing time for the same reason.

You must read Alice wonderland... and everything to do with the wizard of oz.

That's a good book. Smile Another one of his books that's fairly good is this book about this kid who is like part of a resistance movement when the US gets invaded.. (At least I think that it was by Paulsen...)

Lord of the Rings. If you've only seen the movie, let me show you how much they left out (really weird comparision chart here):

Oh, and a middle school book, but Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.

Make sure to read The Hobbit before any of the LOTR books.

Ender's Game or Ender's Shadow, Orson Scott Card, but don't expect the same thing from their sequeals. Or perhaps His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman? Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy maybe (before the movie comes out)?

Anything by Tom Clancy, can't put them down, kudos to Clancy for Rainbow Six, if there is one of books to be a movie, Rainbow Six is it.

Also since you mentioned 1984, you should read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is another futuristic ultilitarian novel.
