Doitle | What on earth are you talking about Dave? That was my analogy. I don't see a teh in your post. I was pointing out that people pick the stupidest reasons to suddenly turn their back on religion. It's become some evil thing that everyone is indoctrined to hate from a young age. News flash for you all, Atheism = Religion! A religion is a beleif structure, therefore if you don't beleive in a higher power then your RELIGION is atheism. Anyhow, people like Silas Marner had a reason to turn their back on the Church. People who break a nail and blame it on the corruption of the church should go be on a pike.
|
People are indoctrinated to hate religion? Whoa, that's changed, then. Back in may day (which isn't too long ago), it was us being indoctrinated to pity people who didn't have religion. I would also like to point out that I'm not atheist, either.
Remember those Conversation Terroist tactics - you just used the "Swing the debate to the far extreme" one there, my friend
I have reasons to separate from the CofE church, but I don't push the point to say "turn my back on it" - like a few people, I find that the actual principles, when translated to a modern perspective, are good to live by, but I'll be damned (heh.) if I'll be a part of a religon which can't even decide if it wants to wear the same pair of socks without sparking up some kind of hyper-religious debate.

Not here.
I've had an ALMOST polar style of learning, one might say - My first school (3-12) WAS a "Bible-belt" school, so to speak - Services every day, Holy Communion on a Wednesday, and the Religion lesseons were very much "God exisits, he created the world, now pray" type.
(13-Present) Has been not the opposite, but certainly different. Moved to a grammar school - a school funded by the state. We have a "collective act of worship" once a week that certainly is Christian, but otherwise the style of religous teaching is:
"Let's have a look at all the religons, how they worship, what they believe, and how they act".
Begpardon, I don't see how I'm being indoctrinated to hate other religions.
True, my edu-ca-shun system is different to yours, but I do not think I can be accused of hating religion, and I am IN that "public school system" you speak of.

I still dont' agree that your govenrment in the US is anti-religion.
It is in fact INCREIDBLY pro-Christian, up to the point of fundamentalism, which is just scary. Do you not remember that they were sticking things on books saying "Don't believe this crap, and REMEMBER, Evolution is a THEORY, creationism ROCKS"?
What about all the anti-gay stuff where they are thinking of changing the federal constitution to ban gay marriage (Don't want to get into this issue again, we've beaten that dead horse to... er.. death since I started this thread).
Still, I must say "owch" if you can't even say Christianity without incurring the wrath of the system.

Over in the US Religion has become not just taboo, but to the point where... I can't beleive I'm using this analogy. It's exactly like Lord Moldevort in Harry Potter. If I say Christian in the middle of a class. It goes silent and I get disciplenary action for being "insensitive". That isn't hyperbole. That is a common occurance.
|
I have no clue what you are talking about. That smply does not happen in schools in the US.
In England it isn't a big deal either. Its the same shit over there, only that they have Religious Education where they teach about all the major religions. (They throw in Atheism there too briefly)

Just to clarify...

That's a bit of a generalization...It would have been better to say California.

Doitle | I was just wondering where in general you were. If you were in school currently or not. Anyhow here in the midwest that's how the schools are. They are obsessively anti-religious. You get disciplenary action talking about your own religion! It's insanity! Of course if your muslim or Jewish then of course its alright. If I say Oh it's Lent. GREEN SHEET. I could be getting pelted with Menorahs and thats "Diversity"... Grr...
|
Here in California, we celebrate the Jewish holidays in school....Wether we are Jewish or not. Celebrate might not be the right word, but we get days off on the Jewish holidays.

Well, no I don't complain about that. (More 3-day weekends!)
Although I don't think it's the right thing for a school to do.

But didn't you realise? Being a part of the majority is bad, we have to simper round to make damn sure we don't offend a few people, to hell with the ones that were BORN HERE!
I was in a shop on sunday, they were playing rap music with prolific use of the word n***er. I could sue for racism, but then being white they'd laugh me out of the court.

Well yeah, because I know it would get in all the newspapers and the like "White man sues Asian for being racist" and all the anit-racism groups would call me racist, because I find a racist word offensive, and I'm white.
Basically I'm not allowed to have a racist bone in my body, but other races are, because they're a minority and all these anti-racism idiots (who in my opinion keep racism alive) are prejudiced against the people who were born in the country.
I now need a passport in order to get a job, to prove I'm actually British. I speak english better than most, and I'm white. Of course I'm an Iraqi terrorist!
Sorry it's a bugbear of mine, I couldn't give a s*it if you're black, white or green, but it doesn't work both ways.
