Turns out that Command & Conquer is now freeware meaning that anyone who doesn't have it can now download it.

http://www.abandonia.com/games/378/Command_&_Conquer

For those who aren't convined:

Quote:

We had a serious check before adding this game, and all our research indicates that the game is indeed abandoned.

1. Westwood (or rather eagames) have stopped selling it.
2. The support for the game shows a dead link.
3. HOTU doesn't have a BUY-link for it.
4. The game is not on the TUOL Warez list.
5. Sold Out Software (who owns the sell out rights for the C&C series) doesn't sell it.

So.... YAY!

It's been a bit striped down to reduce the size (i.e. no video clips, music or some sounds and only runs in DOS mode I think. But it'll be good enough for people who want to try it. I think you need to use DOSBox but I don't know.

Very Happy

Abandonware is NOT freeware. If EA wanted to they could easily stop that site from distributing their game over the Internet.

They could, but It's very doubtly that they actually pay someone to check web-sites like this to see if they are posting old abondonded software. Also note that there are more Westwood games, like dune 2 and the Lion King on there.

But I wonder, what the complete rules are about this things. I think copyrights on music have a life time of 50 years if not taken action. Not long ago some of Elvis songs lost there copyrights protection because of that. For computer games altough I don't know. Computer games might loose it quicker.

My god. I had forgotten that some of those existed. There are about 30 games on there that I've looking for since 91. I think i'll take the lot and make a cd or two... God nostalgia is a son of a bitch!

You're right, but did EA actually take over the rights to the C&C's Westwood made before EA bought them? Or are those still Virgin's?

Well, if people are unhappy with the fact that the game is not truly considered abandonware, then a moderater can lock this thread. Wink

I have the game on CD anyway, but I thought that others might be interested.

I got C&C 95 with my first computer. However, the link to the full version of C&C 95 has been on about every warez kiddie's website a long time.

Early days of Compact Disk gaming = leet.

Who's got Myst? I do (also kept the box). Smile

I never got to play C&C95, but I had a good time with the DOS version.

C&C on the Nintendo 64 was so challenging, suprisingly it's still for sale at my local gaming store, but since I sold my Nintendo 64 I doubt there's actually a point to purchase it.

I'd like to be able to read the opinion of a former WS employee on this one.

I suck cock and love it... absolutely love it. And I just got banned for being too immature to be allowed to post here.

Umm.. is it freeware, or abandonware?

Freeware: The company/person who owns the rights has released it as "free to own."

Abandonware: It's no longer supported/produced/etc.

The reason I ask is because freeware is legal to distribute to others, well obviously, free of charge. Abandonware, on the otherhand has simply been abandoned by the company. The copyright has not expired, so it is still technically illegal to distribute.

Unlikely anything will happen though. EA won't give a damn because they wouldn't lose any profits anyway, and some people couldn't run that if it is for DOS (Unless I am mistaken and it is for Win95)

Nope the Command Promt is not DOS. Best way is to install and older version of Windows with MSDOS on it such as Windows 95/98.

Have any of you actually paid attention to the compatability to it? It says DOSBOX, and imagine this, they have a download for DOSBOX right on the site. Nothing gets passed you guys.

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

That's the official site if you would rather get it from there.
