^^^^^^^^^

That topic pretty much explains everything for me.

But, to put it in a nutshell, I have one 512mb stick of PC2700. All I want to know now is if it's better to get another 512mb PC2700 stick for dual channel mode or if I should get a 512mb PC3200 stick and not have dual channel mode (but still 1gb)?

Answers will help greatly.

to be honest, dual channel with nforce2 is not worth worrying over. I would get a PC3200 stick, same manufacturer and close to the same model if possible.

You're right about the FSB and memory clock, and yes, using PC2700 will not be preferable with the A64 but it's not the end of the world either.
[/quote]
I'd agree with that.

I would buy the PC 3200. If your current stick is Dual Channel, then get the PC3200 Dual Channel. If not just get the regular 3200.

My only concern is how much you can mix and match this type of RAM. Generally when you buy RAM, you want everything to be exactly the same (including brand and except for size) to avoid problems.

I only have one stick currently, so it's not in dual channel right now...

Ok then check to see if the 3200 will conflict with your 2700 at all and then buy whatever is appropriate.

This advice sounds a bit generic I know.

Okay:

1) for Dual Channel to function both memory sticks MUST be identical in EVERY WAY. This means capacity, frequency, CAS latency, the physical number of chips on the pcb, ect. must be identical.

2) mixing memory clocks, even if it works, is not typically a good thing. If the faster one underclocks itself to keep pace with the slower one, great. But if the slower one tries to overclock to the faster speed, you'll probably end up with a fried stick of ram.

You're best bet is to buy matched sticks at the same time from the same manufacturer.

Depending on your budget you could pick up a gig of med-high quality memory for under $150.00USD.

I don't mean to be a whore(I work at the store in the link) but here's this.
It's a matched pair of Geil Value DDR 400 ram complete with heat speaders.

Yes, I know that you need two exact memory sticks with the same exact specififcations, but my main question is if I should get a 3200 stick and not do dual channel mode so that in the future, when I get an AMD 64, I won't have to buy TWO PC3200 sticks at least.

I don't want to buy a dual channel kit, I don't have that kind of money that I would like to spend...

You have to have the same PCxxxx otherwise things can go wrong unless you plan on having 1 stick underlocked or 1 stick overclocked (less lifttime).

Just get 2 x 512mb PC3200 Smile

What he said, beisdes I've done some checking and 139 isn't bad for 1024 megs of quality pc3200 memory.

You don't need the same sticks of RAM for dual-channel to work. As long as they are from the same manufacturer and can run stablely at the same frequency and timings as one another it should be fine.

Also dual channel doesn't really affect performance for what you will be needing it for. If you you were an enthuastic benchmarker then obviously then it would make quite a difference.

Like I said before (I thought I said), I don't have the budget to get two whole new 512mb PC3200 sticks of memory. My only two choices are buying either another 512mb PC2700 stick or a 512mb PC3200 stick.

Bump... I need this answered, otherwise I won't be able to upgrade my memory to 1gb.

Just keep in mind that my CPU is only 333mhz FSB, so the only reason I would get PC3200 would be so that later in the future, when I get an AMD 64, I wouldn't have to waste my money on two PC3200 sticks, but only on one.

In non dual channel mode? If so, how do you make it so it doesn't go in dual channel mode?

It depends on what slots you have the chips placed in. If the motherboard detects dual-channel compatability it automatically enables dual-channel.

And if it's not in dual channel mode then there will be no issue with underclocking or overclocking by automatic?

The PC3200 will likely underclock to fit the 333 FSB if it works at all. Just go by what the mobo mfg says will fit. If they say that 3200 will work, go for it.

Which board are you using BTW?

You know, if it was me, I would get another stick of whatever you've got and live with it until you're next upgrade. Cause DDR2 is here, we sell it at the store where I work. My advice is to make do for a year or 2, save you're cash, and then build an UGM.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to upgrade my computer completely in 2006, so that works out well.

One more question before you go... as long as the other stick has the exact same stats as the other, but is a different company, it'll still work fine in dual channel mode? For example:

1x 512mb PC2700 SimpleTech and 1x 512mb PC2700 Corsair

Even though they're both different manufactures, would they still work together in dual channel mode?

If the physical chip counts are the same and the hardware settings like CAS latency and such are identical they should...should. Don't expect them to however, consider is a joyous confluence of events should they operate in Dual Channel.

Good luck with it though.

I'm actually considering "downgrading" my memory in a few weeks since my board actually only supports ddr/266 and the stick of ddr/333 is downclocking to work.

I just can't leave this thread until I know exactly what I'm doing...

Here is the current memory I have right now:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=20-150-343&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=System+Memory

Yes, mighty expensive compared to most other brands. I don't want to pay that much again when I can get one for almost $15 less...

Here is the other stick of memory that is cheaper but is not the same manufacture:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-202&depa=0

I want to know if those two will work in dual channel mode, even though they're both different manufactures.

From what i heard, its possible to use 2 diff kind of manufactures. But it isnt recommended. Kingston is good though, but if u pay 15 more for the other (simpltech) its better i think.
Next time, instead of simpltech, get brands like Corsair, Gell,Kingston ecta.
Not that others suck but because of icompatible issues. And famous brands give a lifetime warranty aswell
