I wonder how many people here will accuse him of being a terrorist, thus "justifying" the torture.

Then I wonder how many of those people can prove it.

The thing is that they tried to prove that guy was a terrorist. The only trouble was that they killed him in the process.

It reminds me of that process used to prove someone is a witch.
Throw them in a lake and if:
A. They sink, then they are not a witch, but they drown.
B. If they float, then they are a witch, but they are taken and killed.

I hate the idea of torture, and I could never be one to inflict it on someone else. I can't justify it, and I won't justify it. I can, however, say that it's a necessary evil. If it saves countless American AND Iraqi lives, then I say it's all the more worth it. If we can somehow predict and even prevent suicide bombers and ambuses, we can save many lives while successfully restoring order in Iraq. While I'll agree that this wasn't achieved in this case, it is in many other cases.

whoa.

Wait... the story says this was all part of the Abu Ghraib situation and that the man's death was already declared to be a murder by the US military way back when that story first came out.

Why is this news now...?

The story says the new details come from an anonymous source who leaked information to the press. How do we know this isn't another 'National Guard memo' type thing?

It is easy, during the torture did he ever deny being one?

Considering he hasn't been deemed a terrorist, what do you think?

Since neither of us know for certain, but he didn't admit to one (as far as we know, because he was, and is still considered merely a suspect), the probability lies closer to the "I'm not a terrorist" bit.

But then again, would you admit to being a terrorist, even while being tortured? Not only that, we don't know when this situation actually took place in coorelation to with the other tortures. Admitting to being a terrorist PROBABLY wouldn't have changed anything about his situation, and in all likelyhood would have amplified it.

So I'd bet he said that he wasn't a terrorist. Unless of course you can prove otherwise.

Well what people say these things are used for is to get people to admit to things. Even if they didn't do them. The guy obviously cannot get the death penalty under any law. So if he knew saying he was a terrorist would have gotten him off with a lighter sentence than why didn't he just say it then come his time in court he can change his mind. Could it be he was a terrorist? And denying he was going to do these things to his enemies took away the point of being one? Being tortured ,didn't he die as he wanted to, a martyr?

I recommend a brain transplant.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

That's why I pointed out the timeframe. If it was around the time of the other tortures, then it would seem quite futile to admit anything-- especially if you knew the ones tortured where in fact terrorists themselves. If the man killed saw the other tortures take place, and to people he knew were innocent, then well, admitting to being a terrorist probably would've had a much worse fate.

But we don't know because we're not given enough information, and that is why I questioned whether or not anyone would call this man a terrorist without being able to prove it.

About that if you would have noticed the subtelty, I had capitalized specific words on purpose. I capitalized Terrorist, Good, and Bad in a kind of subliminal attempt to anchor my argument in your (the reader's) head.

No, he was just a poor sob trying to save his own ass, but got killed doing it. If you were pcked up and interrogated, would you admit to something you didn't do? Now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that he was a terrorist. We don't know that.

Quote:

A. How do you know he wanted to die?
B. How do you know he would have died for religious beliefs?
C. Use "Martyrs" carefully. That implies heroism. Some people obviously see terrorists as freedom fighters etc, whereas some seem them as power hungry rebels.
D. Calling him a martyr implies that he was a terrorist, but we don't know if he is one.

Navy prosecutors in San Diego have charged nine SEALs and one sailor with abusing al-Jamadi and others. All but two lieutenants have received nonjudicial punishment; one lieutenant is scheduled for court-martial in March, the other is awaiting a hearing before the Navy's top SEAL.

This is in addition to the many soldiers in connection with Abu Ghraib abuses who have already been court martialed/in the process of being court martialed.

The people responsible are being investigated and punished.
There is no issue here.

How pathetic the anti-Bush media has become. Would you people stop trying to link George W. Bush with torture in Abu Ghraib?

Errrmm...Yes Netscape -an AOL owned company - with news powered by CNN. I suppose they are part of this secret, liberal, anti-american, anti-bush communist, socialist and underground news network that needs a secret handshake to be admitted access to.

This isn't anti-Bush media. I didn't even post it because of that reason. Look at the title of the topic and then look at the attitude on that stupid girl's face. Make sense to you now?

That is part of the reason I posted this. The other part is because this is like "The Salem Witch Trials: Reloaded."

bah "torture". Poor guys, we took naked pictures of them and made dogs bark at them...same guys who shortly before were trying their best to KILL US. Yeah we treat them SO bad, look how great they treat the people they capture...quick and painless beheading and then send the video to your parents.
