Is there any way to reduce the ping times? It's not always very bad, but when it is, it can go over 3000, sometimes over 6000. Then it either comes back down to around 300 or causes my connection to be lost.

When it peaks at 6000 lik that, those are spikes. What kind of connection do you have?
If you are very far away from the server you are trying to join, then that could be a cause.

I have a 56K modem, though I can't ever manage to get my connect speed to go over 31.20 kpbs.

Go to your modem properties in your control panel and there should be an option to change the speed in bits somewhere. you might be lucky in that it isn't set to maximum speed.

Unfortunately, it's set to the max already. But, is it possible that high error rates could be causing my high ping time and so turning off error correction may resolve my dillemma?

i'm pretty sure your ISP is reponsible for that, and you can't adjust that with DSL.

no idea, I have heard of error correction before but don't know what it does.
here is a site I found quickly on google about tweaking 56k modems,

but I can't understand where it is asking you to put in the extra settings.

Have you considered IDSN? 31kbps = about 4KB/s
That speed isn't enough to play a game with no lag or high pings.
