In a few short weeks I'm going to be getting a newer model video card to replace my aging GF4MX 420.
Now, what I want to know, minus any hype or BS, is whether I should get a
Geforce FX 5700 LE
or a
Radeon 9600(non pro/XT/superdupermarketingploy)
Both cards will be in the 128mb memory category.
I would also like any well-reasoned explanations one way or the other, preferably with hard benchmarks to back them up. I also welcome any suggestions of alternatives. However my budget is $80.00 and any suggestions need to fit in that price range. Lastly, I will not be doing any overclocking as I'm not comfortable with it and I need to make this last for a good long while.
Thank you for your cooperation.

You can get a 9600 for 80 bucks? Awesome.
For that price range, I don't think you'll do much better.

If you have found either of those cards for $80, thats a good deal. Bargain in fact. I have seen the FX5500 being sold for about $80, so if you can get your hands on the 5700, its worth it. Although I think the 5700 is just an overclocked version of the 5500. I don't have any experience with ATI card though, so I can't say which is better.

It's just a standard 9600, not a Pro, XT, SE, or whatever suffix ATi has decided to tack on it.
Look here
and here
That second one is local.

A new one though, aprime me lad. I've been advised by someone with a lot more money invested in ebay to never buy anything listed on that site. It's too random as to whether it'll be worth a damn.
You know I'd really just love to pump my budget, but it's pretty much locked in stone.

Since I feel like gathering more information about your system... May I know what your current video card is?
I suck cock and love it... absolutely love it. And I just got banned for being too immature to be allowed to post here.

I've never really been a big fan of ATi. It stems from back in the day when ATi's drivers were shit. There was one that broke several rather popular games and lots of old ones. And they haven't really improved all that much...sure, the cards work all the time now, but there are broken features all over the place.
There is a game I play(Freespace 2) that is being source updated by the community, they've added HT&L, self-illuminated textures, specular lighting, and a whole host of other features and since catalyst 4.4 ATI cards haven't been able to render specular lighting at all, while the Nvidia cards render it just fine.
So while I'm not opposed to getting the ATi, it really needs to be sold to me that it's worth the extra 10 bucks from a speed and unbroken features POV.

I am personally a fan of the NVidia GeForce brand but that is just personal. Either card will do more than what you need for Renegade and most other gaming needs of what is on the market today. I think that the 9600 is more the card if you want it to last you a while withought having to replace it. Either card for $80 or less is certainly a steal so whatever you pick, you got a good price on a good card.
