hey everyone,
im new here, and i just got renguard after my favorite server required me to have it. unlike all the rumors that it causes lag and such i was pleased to find that my gameplay wnt uninterrupted, until about 30 minutes into the game. thats when renegade crashed to the desktop, saying it encountered an internal error and needed to close. i re opened the game and joined the server again. about 5 minutes later my computer gave me a BSOD, so i had to restart. once i got into windows i shut down the pc for a minute then rebooted. i uninstalled renegade and renguard and deleted the directory. then i reinstalled and updated renegade then installed renguard. very soon after i joined the server, my game was crashed back to the desktop again. i rejoined and renegade crashed but i couldnt get out of is because the computer locked up. i noticed that my computer began locking up randomly even while not playing renegade. i had a free saturday that weekend so i reformatted my hard drive thinking it may have been spyware that couldnt be removed or something. after spending an hour and a half reinstalling and installing renegade, updating it, and installing renguard, i had the same problem. most of the time it just crashes to the desktop, sometimes the system locks up when it crashes to the desktop and i have only encountered a BSOD once, and im not sure that renguard was the cause of it. the pc still locked up even while not playing renegade. but i still had these problems after i reformatted and nothing else was installed. i hadnt even surfed the web yet so i kow there was no spyware involved. i have not yet tried the new CP1 as im scared to run renguard because i dont want to mess up my computer. does anyone kow what the problem may be and how to go about fixing it?
thanks in advance
my system info:
win XP pro SP2

512mb pc2700
ati radeon 9700 pro 128 running at AGP 8x with aperture set to 64

It looks like your renegade is crashing/returning to desktop. There may be many reasons for that.
RenGuard only does it, when you have bad/unknown files - if your renegade crashes, look in the RenGuard window for messages, maybe this gives you clues.

well the only mods i had installed are the c4 countdown mod and the ion/nuke countdown mod, but those are just WAV files and shouldnt affect anything. i never had a problem using them before.

Everything looks good on your system until I got here >> realtek ac97 audio I went to Realtek web site and find that these are only codecs and not graphic cards/drivers. Do you have a [edit] Audio card installed on your system? If not you may want to invest in one. your sound driver/codec (whatever) may be crashing you to desktop.
Did you play Renegade before and did you crash to desktop prior to trying to install Renguard?
Make sure you have all the latest drivers for your system and DX9.0c. Ensure you don't exceed your system settings including graphic card output to monitor capabilities/restrictions. Make sure your Renegade game settings are also correctly adjusted.

i havent been running renguard since my reformat and i have noticed 2 desktop crashes in the past week and when i click quit to desktop, it stops responding and i need to ctrl-alt-delete it. i think it may be an issue with sp2, as i didnt have that problem before. i will be test running it in compatibility mode to see if that stops the problems. after i have fixed the issue i will install the latest version of renguard and see how everything runs. i have updated all of my drivers on my system and i have also noticed that my video card and USB root hub are both sharing irq 16, which i think could be a problem, lol. thanks for the help everybody, ill post the results after i run a few tests to try and fix the prob.

my cpu is is running cool as is my graphics card. i am not having any problems in any other games, so i dont think heat is an issue. ive been running renegade in compatibility mode, and it hasnt crashed yet. im going to see if it works for a few more days then ill try renguard again. you wouldnt think xp sp2 would mess things up, but it fixes some problems and randomly creates new ones.

Flyingfox, your CPU isn't necessarily at that bad temps, depends what
processor you use. The Pentium CPU's are usually at lower temps than Athlons. For example my Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton) used to run at 75C under load with the defaul fan, just like my neigbours's one, without any crashing/symptoms. (Bought a new fan after the old loosesned and got noisy, now at 55C idle). Three other friends I know that have AMD processors have idle temperatures at around 60C. Some CPU's are known to have been fully operational even at almost 100C. Of course there's some variety between processors, only way to tell what yours can handle is to test.
Processors are supposed to be hot, they calculate craploads of stuff all the time. Many PC modders want to get their CPU temperatures as low as possible, going all the way down to 20C, but that's not necessary. Sure, the CPU lifespan is longer when the CPU is cool, but if it goes from 6 years to 5 years, does it really matter? In 5 years you can get that same CPU with 10 bucks or so, and you've probably dumped it already anyway.
Here's a link to CPU "hazard temps":
http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/CPU/CPU%20Temperatures.shtml
Just ranting a little here, I'm sick of people who go like "Omg my Processor is at 50 Celsius!!1 it's guna burn what can I doo!?!?"
Edit: ALSO NOTE, that P4 processors SLOW DOWN when they overheat to avoid damage, so you don't need to worry about them that much. If your PC seems to get slow with a P4, check your temperatures, if it's abnormally high the CPU isn't working at full speed. I read a review from Mikrobitti PC magazine (mikrobitti.fi, finnish) where they removed the entire P4 CPU fan. The CPU didn't get damaged, but due to low CPU speed the PC was nearly inoperable.
There's a hole in the sky through which things can fly.

ok well i installed it. now i am downloading the core patch update and while i was doing this the pc froze and ATI vpu recover kicked in saying that the vpu was in deadlock and that it is now put into sowftware mode drawing... im hoping this is just an EXTREMELY rare coincidience, as my pc has been running without problems with the latest drivers for a while now... what would make it do this? i wasnt even running the game, only the core patch updater?

despite that installation problem, it has been running nice for 2 hours now. i will need to do further testing but its looking good. my only complaint is that sometimes i get lag spikes that i never used to get before. and it also seems like the bullets are laggy too? maybe just my imagination, ill post later after some more testing. right now im installing the UNrules fan mappacks.
