I've been having problems with Renegade, and I tried reinstalling it but the install program doesn't work. It always seems to have problems copying Always.dat and freezes at 9% and gives me an error message that says "Renegade Setup Error - File System Error". The problem started when the hard drive with the OS failed (I have two, one with only the OS and the other with everything else). I replaced the HD and reinstalled the OS, but the registry was gone, which caused some inconvenience as I could no longer start it from the autoplay. So, with all my other games I reinstalled them, and they worked fine, but not Renegade. Dad tried the alternate installer he found here, but we don't have the encrypted serial number from the registry as the old registry is on a failed HD. The problem always happens with the Always.dat file, and it seems to be a corrupted file or something. Any help you can give?

Why do you need the encrypted serial? That's a different thing completely to the stock standard alternate install. In the alternate install, you still put in the normal serial, just the same as the standard install. Depending on what caused the Hard drive crash, you may have other damaged components in your PC as well. Faulty (but not completely dead) RAM will cause a similar problem to what you're experiencing.

Well I just tried installing it on my other computer, which hasn't had any problems. This time when I tried to install it it wouldn't start; I got the "Setup Has Encountered An Error And Needs To Close". Oh, and if I ever get around to it I'll try swapping RAM.

You could always try extracting always.dat to your game folder manually. You can manually extract the files (can't remember the archive names, should be easy to find though, they're the huge files) using winzip or something like that, then when the installer runs it should progress to the next file.
This worked for someone else who was crashing out on always.dat.
