Aston shell is a Windows replacement shell. It would replace your explorer.exe.
Some things that are beneficial in using it are:
Biggest benefit is that it uses conciderably less memory than Explorer. (avgs about 2MB after initial load.)
It also is very customizable in both looks, and how you can use it. (has plug-in's available via astonshell.com or you could write your own).
Very stable. In all the time I've used it, I've never had Aston crash on me without me doing something to provoke it.
More in depth information about it is available at it's site (http://www.astonshell.com).

Not a problem! I'm always happy to pass along this great Shell. Just so you know, it does come with a 30-day trial... Registration for the Shell is $28, which is more than a bargin and worth it. After registration there will be no nag screens, free updates (up to v2, that will be a seperate program that would need to be registered/purchased again), and full tech support and email notifications when updates are available. There is also a dedicated community over there at the site's forum where they produce great themes and plug-ins.

MilkyLep | Well do you know anyway that i could get aston shell for... free?
|
It's free to download, they just bug you about registering it. Also, after like a month I think it expires.

It will cease to function after a month, and you'll be required to switch back to explorer.exe using the provided Shell Swapper.
You are able to earn a "Free Registration" by creating a worthy theme or plug-in for Aston. More info on this is available in their forums.

I uninstalled Aston, because ever since I installed it, my computer has had several bad issues. Just beware.

Hooray for Aston Shell!
Much nicer than the normal Explorer, and I'd say the $28 is worth it if you really like the differences

What kind of "issues" ?
|
Renegade was running at 30 fps instead of my normal average (70 - 100 fps), everything was loading slower, my computer stopped starting up in a flash, and my computer would lock up sometimes. I'm sure there are more issues I have experienced, but I just don't remember them. All I know is that my computer doesn't have these "issues" anymore ever since I uninstalled.

Is it possible to have the shell run for only one user?
Also, are there any other good, free shell replacements? [I remember hearing something about Black Box way back when on these forums as another replacer, but I don't know anything about it.]
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt (1918)
"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

I removed aston an hour ago. It crashed 5-10 times today and was closing programs without my concent. (IE: Games , Winamp and Firefox kept crashing)
Everything works fine with IE now , Though it does run slower than aston.

They don't publicize this very much, but a lot of the user made skins, especially if they use a lot of high resource usage features are horribly unstable. I never had a problem with the default skin or several of the tamer ones but there were a few that had me on the verge of a complete system format/reinty.
There was a time when people were impressed that I have the firepower to decimate a planet in under 10 minutes.
