Photoshop is one of those programs that I would pirate. There's no way in hell I'm going to pay $600 for a photo editing program.

GIMP has a pretty steep learning curve as I understand it, somewhere between 3ds max and the secrets of teh universe as I recall. I can't learn MAX either, the UI has no logical layout, it's just a bunch of buttons thown out on a screen.
PSP is only a hundred bucks at most places, version 8 is easily as good as PS.
There was a time when people were impressed that I have the firepower to decimate a planet in under 10 minutes.
