i understand why we want reporters with the troops and i agree with it. we've all seen the propaganda in the arab world accusing us of killing civilians and war crimes. having the reporters with our troops gives constant evidence that sadaam's propaganda is untrue.
sadaam can say all he wants(adssuming he's still alive :rolleyes: ) but when it comes down to it... a picture is worth a thousand words.

In the back of the troops minds are 2 things when the press is with them in combat.
1. Protect the reporter
2. “I’m going to be on TV”.

Heh...I don't think the reporters are right on the front lines, or close enough to combat that they have to be babysat. If I was a soldier with bullets whizzing around and whatnot, the LAST thing I would give a damn about is being on TV.
I didn't know that stuff about Jennings. If its true like you CLAIM  then he is indeed an ass. CNN puts their own slant on things as well, you can't really rely on one source for news anymore.

most of what i've seen from embedded troops has been very supportive of the troops. i think for the most part they are doing a very good job with a few exceptions. btw the reporters are right up their with the soldiers on the front. there were a few fox reporters who were slightly injured the other day when a mortar hit right near them.
so far, the fox reporters (except geraldo) are the ones i like the best simply because of their personality.

You know, having been in Desert Storm myself, thank God I didn't have a reporter in my unit. I really dislike reporters and avoided them like the plague. The ones that did come around only wanted to ask us questions that they figured would garner them the most ratings. I got tired of hearing "don't you think this war is just about oil?". That comment by reporters really ticked me off. I spent several days with some of the Kuwaiti tankers around New Years and I can tell you, I wasn't fighting for oil, it was to help oust the Iraqi army from a country they attacked without provocation.
While I'll admit that I kinda like seeing some of the coverage on the war, I do believe that some of the reporters are drawing their own conclusions without waiting for the other side of the story. For instance, when they first reported that a unit shot and killed a bunch of women and children in a van that didn't stop at a checkpoint, all the reports were about it being a tragedy and an embarrassment to the US because the warning shot fired may have come too late. I thought to myself that their had to be more to the story than a bunch of over-zealous soldiers shooting at anything that came close to their checkpoint, sure enough we've recently found out that these Iraqi's were ordered to do this by the Iraqi regime.
I see no honor in what the Iraqi military is doing by using innocent women, children, and men to shield them from harm. When I was in Desert Storm I never shot any civilians, friendlies, or anyone who surrendered. It just goes to show you that this regime cannot be trusted and must be removed from power.
Sorry for getting off on a rant, now back to the original point. Peter Arnett has every right to his opinion, but he crossed the line when he put it on Iraqi TV for the whole world to see. This is called "giving aid and comfort to the enemy". And is a treasonous act. As for Geraldo, yes he made a big mistake by drawing a map (albeit a crude one in the sand) and giving a position away.
I used to watch CNN, but have recently switched to Fox News because they seem to be more fair and balanced.
In summation: CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS = BAD
Fox News Channel = GOOD
In a sea of liberal media, thank God there's at least one channel for a right-wing conservative like me.

I remember when they used to come on the ship. The sailors avoided them except foor the new guys who wanted to be famous. The rest of us knew better, and knew the captain was watching. All they ever did was take pictures of planes taking off. I don't care who you are, that gets old after plane number 3 leaves the deck. The reporter also couldn't do live feed, he had to have it checked for sensitive material like what Geraldo said before transmission. The big question they kept asking us was, " Do you feel the war in Bosnia / Herzegovina / Kosovo / Iraq is just?"
A dangerous thing to answer wrong in a combat unit.

I avoided the press. I was asked once for a comment on the first war. I told the reporter to "Get the fuck out of my face"! They went to my CO, he told them "Obviously, he didn't want to talk to you".
