England must still be in the dark ages, my house has been cable ready for at least a decade. I have had it for at least 6 years now. And it has been around 2-3mb line. I don't exactly live in a city either. When I first moved here we had farms in every direction.

Yeeap, just like quite a few areas of Europe, once you leave our inner city areas (5mb/sec plus), the coverage and speeds are nowhere near as wide-spread as in America/Canada. For foreign countries cable seems to be a near essential feature of living, it's just nowhere near as popular here as it is in other countries.

Shame really, i've had to put up with 56k for nearly 5 years (living in the sticks), whilst my mates have all had broadband for the past year...

Thinking about it, i can remember back 7 years or so ago before they'd even broken the 1GB processor speed when everyone used to use 28.8kbps modems... now they sucked. The internet never really took off here until 1994-ish, hence the connection speed bottle-neck we now have.

Ah well, the suffering shall soon end.

About fucking time!

Although I have ADSL now (for about a month), is was only because of one company that I could get it. I only really wanted ADSL about a year ago, so it wasn't really that bad.

For others who are stuck with 56K like I once was, it's annoying not to have the option to upgrade.

Ooh, nasty.

Yeah, well i e-mailed BT customer support and even though the news article clearly says "Distance limits removed for 512kb/sec ADSL services", apparently the limit will be increased to 10km, rather than having the 'limit' removed.

BT Customer Support

The line length requirements are changing on 06/09/04 as follows:

For 512k - up to 10km
For 1 meg - between 4-6 km

According to TheAA.com route finder, via road I think i'm roughly 9.6km away from the telephone exchange... i just hope the cables don't do any screwed up detours.

Think of it this way. You can get nearly everywhere fast by train in England, but you can get online nearly everywhere in the US Very Happy
