Yeah, ACK is Aircraftkiller's nickname because Aircraftkiller is too long and AK is stupid and not definible enough. You can't just say that you don't have a nickname. It's out of your control - if people call you ACK, then that is, in fact, your nickname.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect "domestic security." Given the difficulty of defining the domestic security interest, the danger of abuse in acting to protect that interest becomes apparent. --U.S. Supreme Court decision (407 U.S. 297 (1972)

"AK" makes me think of an AK-47 or AK-74 gun.

How Aircraftkiller has his name, his abbreviation should be "A". How Engi had it written, it WOULD be "ACK", BUT because of protest and bitching from him, Aircraftkiller wants his screenname to be abbreviated to "AK".

whoa.

To write as best as you can, do not have a preposition at the end of a sentence.
Actually, a preposition at the end of a sentence isn't really all that bad...
http://education.qld.gov.au/publication/style/writing/rules.html

Winston Churchill, when told he should not end a sentence with a preposition, retorted: 'That is the sort of pedantry up with which I will not put'.

The only real rule, therefore, is to engage in clear, unambiguous communication. Anything else comes a poor second.

j_ball430

Aircraftkiller wants his screenname to be abbreviated to "AK".
Unfortunately for him, he's such an annoying little punk that his bitching and whining will only ENCOURAGE people to call him ACK.

Also, ACK seems to have this habit of thinking that abbreviations can only have one meaning, and AK is already taken by a rifle. So I guess he's just SOL.

I didn't say it was all that bad, but to look more professional it's better to not get yourself into that habit. Especially for an English grammar and composition test.

Yeah, I know... I just wanted an excuse to mention that Winston Churchill quote because I think it's funny. Razz

People! Aircraft is one word! Killer is another word! That means when we abbreviate the name "Aircraftkiller," the abbreviation is AK! Not ACK!

Yes, but they abbreviate how many... errrr.... things the word has. I forget the name, but when you say a word like 'Aircraftkiller' it has 3 of these, so people abbreviate the first letter of them. Unfortuanatly I have a great idea of what I'm talking about but forget the word for it. Sad

Aircraft is one word, not two, in the context of the name "Aircraftkiller." While 'air' and 'craft' are seperate words, when you are referring to machines capable of flight, you use the word 'aircraft.' 'Air Craft' doesn't make any sense. If there were spaces, it would be "Aircraft Killer," not "Air Craft Killer." Hence, the correct abbreviation is AK, not ACK.

Or we could avoid the confusion, toss the "ACK" monicker out the window, and just call him FRL.

It's short for an anagram of his name: Frail Rat Licker.

The word you are looking for is syllable. Unfortunately though, you are not correct in how an abbreviation is formed.

Quote:

ab·bre·vi·a·tion
n.

1. The act or product of shortening.
2. A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC for United States Marine Corps.

For the record, the term "ACK" is not an abbreviation of Aircraftkiller's name, it could be an acronym.

Quote:

ac·ro·nym
n.

A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, [u]such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

Of course, "ACK" would only be an acronym if his name were "Aircraft Killer", which it is not. Since Aircraftkiller's name does not have a space, it's now a compound word. Being that it's a compound word, you are not able to make an acronym of a single word. Therefore, if you were to use the term "ACK" when refering to Aircraftkiller, you would be using in improperly created abbreviation of his name.

So now let's drop it.

Your logic is infallible.*

Your own examples don't even follow the rules you outlined.

I say ACK!

[A]ir[C]raft[K]iller.

The arguement Aircraft is one word is invalid. If Aircraft is one word, then we should also say that Aircraftkiller is one word, and call Aircraftkiller A instead of AK.

ACK uses the principal of hard syllabic sounds to create an acronym. As far as I'm aware this isn't a valid procedure. A, AK and ACKL are the only valid ways of shortening AircraftKiller's name, although techinically there should be full stops included in the shortening of the name.

People use ACK, which at first glance looks like a synonym of "Doh!"
