Ok, I'm really fed up with my FPS. I just recently started playing in windowed mode (800x600). And just now I switched to the smallest window I can get. But still I join a server with aboout 20 people, and this is my FPS..

http://img1.imageshack.us/img1/6046/omg10.jpg

It's really starting to suck. If anyone was wondering, I have a HP pavillion computer with 512 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 video card, and a 933Mhz processor. I was wondering if maybe this could be one of the reasons my FPS is so low..

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1520/omg2.jpg

If to many programs are running in the background, what ones should I close out?

If anybody has any suggestions besides get a better computer I would really appreciate it.

Hmm...processor perhaps? Confused
I play Renegade on my laptop (2.4GHz processor, 40GB HDD, 256MB RAM, & an ATI Radeon 340M graphics card) & I get roughly 40-50FPS, though I've only averaged it in the last few days. Smile
I'd say MSN Messenger could be a part of your problems, cuz it's a memory hog alot of the time. It says it's using a little, but it's using alot more, I know from experience. Wink
Other than that, no real clue, if I were able to get on it or something I'd be more help. But I can't, so ya Sad Hope I helped some Very Happy

Do you know how much this would cost? Is it the 128MB card?

Yeah right, Alkaline, he's going to go from the GeForce4 MX 420 to the Radeon X800 XT, the world's fastest (macci got 16k in 3DMark 2003 with one) video card, which was originally going for $820 USD in Japan--it's now $450. That's definitely realistic. His CPU is the big bottleneck anyway.

EDIT: Oh, I know, he can get a Pentium 4 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition! Those are cheap, right? Only $1000!

FFS, I submitted a long post to this thread yesterday, and it hasn't came through. It came up with page cannot be displayed, and I couldn't get back to the reply box.

Anyway, here it is summarised. First, open up microsoft config (msconfig) from the run box, go to the startup tab, turn off everything except scanregistry, taskmonitor, systemtray and loadpowerprofile. Now, right click your desktop, go to properties, settings tab, advanced box. Find the #d settings for your card and turn the detail stuff down if you can. There might be a folder in start > programs called Nvidia, geforce or whatever that lets you do the same thing. Now, right click My Computer, properties, find the device manager, disk drives, right click the one you use, properties, settings tab and enable DMA (direct memory access). Finally, create a folder on your desktop called "textures" and shift all texture modifications in your renegade\data folder into it. AT LAST, restart. Try the game now. Still slow? Try a driver update from http://www.nvidia.com. Your main problem is probably your processor speed. You have good RAM, decent video card.. you can get a 1.8 Ghz processor (athlon 2200XP) cheapish these days, have alook around stores. Hope that helps. By the way, I have no idea what NAV is.

I play on a MX 420 and don't see any problems.

The whole object is to have a few icons in the system tray(the place with you clock) as possible. When I was on a cable modem(in Windows 98se mind) I had that little yellow speaker and the Zonealarm icon.

If you are playing a action oriented Multiplay you don't need:

IM progs
AV progs
TSRs of any kind

Exit them before hand or prevent them from starting in the first place Very Happy , to save both memory space and processor cycles. AV progs especially expand to take up a lot of room in memory that they don't need under the pretext that they are scanning incoming data for viruses on the fly, while I'm sure that there are viruses that propagate over networks like that, I'm also sure that they aren't going to get by my firewall to affect my system.

IMO, the only time a program should be running is if I have told it to run and am usin it or if I have stepped away from the machine but was using it.

There was a time when people were impressed that I have the firepower to decimate a planet in under 10 minutes.

The Athlon XP was AMD's high-performance CPU line. It has since been replaced by the Athlon 64, which is basically the same as the XP with revamped architecture and support for 64-bit extensions.

You can get an Athlon XP 2600+ (1.91 GHz) for $90, and a really nice motherboard for a similar price. Of course, you'd need to get new memory too; 512 MB of DDR333 can be had for $80-100. See how quickly these computer expenses balloon?

i used to get that, all you have to do is run a disk check and it makes it work. u are using xp from the screenshots, so in case u dont know how to do a diskcheck, go to my computer, right click on the c drive and click properties. then click tools and then click on the check now button. tick the two check boxes and restart your pc, it will then run during the boot up.

i hope ive helped Smile

Probably a bit late (and the guy who mentioned checking the Advanced tab has already said it), but make sure you have FSAA (anti-aliasing) turned OFF.
it can really kick the framerate in the bollocks on an old GF4 MX.

It's just your speed. 900mhz and a Geforce 4 MX won't really get you anywhere if you want Renegade to run fast.
You just need to buy a whole new computer. I'm running on an Athlon XP 2600+ 2.1GHZ, 512MB DDR PC2700, an 80GB Western Digital Hard Drive, and a Geforce FX 5600XT 256mb video card. With this computer I get 90+ fps in 8 player servers, 70+ fps in 16 player servers, 50+ fps in 32 players, and 25 - 40 fps in 56 player servers.
