Hey, I am just wondering how much BHS got when they appealed to the public for donations. I donated £5 (used to be TnTANDY) and I know some others donated a little bit more. I am just curious thats all Razz

I know it was enough to pay my over-traffic bill (150 Euro) ..

Besides that, last time I checked with Crimson it wasn't quite enough to pay the rent of one dedicated server for more than one month..

Maybe Crimson can shed in some light..

After sending mac 150 Euros for bandwidth overages that BHS incurred, we currently have a little over $180. But I wouldn't yet feel comfortable using that to start up a new server because it's not really enough to cover more than a couple months and I would end up paying for it just like I pay for all the other servers. Sad

Every donation is much appreciated and it was quite nice not to have to come up with nearly $200 USD unexpectedly.

We've shuffled the load among the servers we have, but a fourth would REALLY help the situation and improve stability.

Well, i am expecting a large payment of back pay from college that is long overdue this month, when I get it, I will donate another £5, as they say, every little bit helps. Wink

Okay, you currently have 5 renegade servers online, all of 32 players limit, with the exception of the 8 player sniper server.

Whenever i go online (at various times of day) there's rarely 20 players spread between them (so out of 128 available player slots, only 20 or so are actually in use).

Call me crazy if you wish, but in my opinion that doesn't warrant needing another server at all.

You've really only gotta look at the success of The Pits. One server (40 player limit) and 90% of the time it has 30 or more joined players. Yes, it has a commited following of people, but so do you. Plenty of people played on the n00bstories servers (and still do), only problem being that they're spread thin across 5 servers.

I can understand that you like to have a presence on the game listings to support the community, but surely it would be better for everyone if you ran only one or two servers?

At least this way we'd have packed 32 player matches on a great server, plus you wouldn't need to fork out $200 per server, for servers that you really don't need.

I agree with npsmith. Two to three servers are sufficient. The money used to support the empty servers should be redirected towards the renguard network.

As Crimson mentioned, the empty servers are also used as test and development boxes. They are also windows machines and cannot be converted to linux, they would have to be dropped and buy a new linux server.

Whilst i think of it, the donations were specifically given for RenGuard, so i assume when you say 'server' you mean a server for the renguard network?

Or do you really mean another game server?
Crimson

That's... not really the issue.
Care to elaborate?

She meant another renguard master server, not a game server.

My Renegade servers run on Windows boxes. The RenGuard master server software only works on Linux boxes. If I took my windows servers offline, the RenAlert players who fill at least one 32-player server would have nowhere to play, the RenAlert developers would have to find somewhere else to test development versions of their game, BHS would no longer have a test box...

But it's the attitudes like these that make me want to pull all of my financial support. I surely have better things to spend my money on.

I think it's just that the majority of people don't realise the sheer amount of money/effort you have put into keeping this community up and running.

It really is appreciated, even if many people don't show it. Now that i understand how much it is costing you, I plan to donate at least $20 every month to help you out with the hosting bills.

Anything i can do to help, i'll do.

Has BHS recieved tax exempt status yet? I remember when BHS was created that it was suggested that getting donations to BHS would be a donation that could be used for writing off taxes.

I will give money either way, but being able to clame donations on my taxes would be a good bonus and would likely result in more donations.

It can be done, most charities ask you to so it when you donate.
