heard people with DSL complaining about the lag, and they stick it all on slower modems...

Here's how it works:

you connect to the host, and the host connects you to all the other players. If anything is lagging you, it's your ping rate to the host. The only effect a "lagging" player has on you is that you see THEM moving erratically.
