Westwood Online vs. Gamespy [message #-979040] Sat, 09 March 2002 12:51 Go to next message

This is the first game I am playing on Gamespy and I am hating it. I come from Delta Force and playing that on their servers, very nice! So, before I go buy Renegade in the store, could you guys tell me if the Westwood servers are better than the Gamespy crap. Otherwise, I'll keep playing on the demo version and forget about it.

Thanks.

Hey,
WOL is way better than Gamespy. There are more maps, ranks, and better sniper spots. If you do get the game please don't go on gamespy and start asking people how to get online with it.

yah i tried playing on lamespy with the demo and it sucked. the lag was terrible. the all seeing eye was much better, but i don't think you can play the full version there. you will experience some lag with wol but there's more rooms there so you can always switch till you find a good server.

I've played on both WOL and Gamespy, and in my experience it's the actual server you find that matters, not which software you use to find them. Both WOL and Gamespy have fast servers, and both also have slow servers. Just hope you get lucky and find a good one.

However, a question for you ssjfenix: How does playing on either WOL or Gamespy affect those things?

They both allow you to play on the exact same maps with the exact same sniper spots. If there were some maps you didn't see in a Gamespy game, I'm pretty sure it just means that the host didn't choose to include them in the map cycle. That's not Gamespy's fault.

To me, WOL is alot easier to handle than ***spy. GS is crappy an i find it takes alot more work to use it. WOL is pretty good an u jus click an go.

If the game works better on spy or westwood may be debatable, but you'll end up buying the game either way, as you are to weak to resist, you can't take it much longer, you'll see, You will Buy Renegade, mark my words. It's a game you can love to hate with all it's slowness, just think flying veichles soon. Ha ha ha ha

I have played on them both and haven't noticed any real big difference.I did get the dreaded BSOD while playing on WOL and haven't while playing on GS.A fluke??possibly hasn't happened since that one time though

Well it happened, but this time it just kicked me out to desktop, and FUBAR'd my settings.Gonna try GS (shudder) and see if it happens there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

I find WOL much better to play on. It's not that the servers are any better either. It's the fact that that because you have to have an unclaimed serial the players have actually payed for the game are more serious about getting good at it and playing a team game.

On GSA you don't have to have a good serial number to connect to a game, therefore all the pirate jerks play there. In my experience there is a much higher chance that there will be tank stealers, non teamplayers, and other forms of idiots on non WOL games.

WOL also has stats tracking and the possibility of WW doing some quality of service control over the servers. (each dedicated server on WOL is registered with WW under a unique server serial number.) If you play well enough you can win prizes on WOL too.

WOL is far better to get a good game of Renegade.

I have cable internet and I must say that the demo on Gamespy is unplayable with a server listed with a ping higher then 150ms. If you have the demo version look for a server running at about 90ms or less. However, The retail version obviously has far better netcode as I have never experienced lag like I did with the demo. I have never really noticed any difference related to WOL or Gamespy...like mentioned before it's the game servers that effect performance. BTW I usually find faster servers on Gamespy if I uncheck "My country only"...but then again I live in Canada.
