Better to test your connection or just select your connection from the list before playing Renegade? I remember a long long time ago i posted a topic (Don't recall what it was about) and someone said "Always test your connection, games will be less laggy" and someone else replied after saying "Your completely wrong! You should just choose your connection from the list"

Hmmm -
havent really did any testing/retesting - and i seem to always be at full speed.
I'm not sure if this only shows you the ping count ---?

To ur question: I think it depends. If i make the automatic test (using my dsl connection), i am only able to host a 1/1 game. If i set it manual to "cable", the i can host 2/2 WITHOUT ANY LAG.
So for this purpose, it is "better" for me to set it myself.
Don't know if it has any effects if u join a foreign game.

The bandwith test sucks, it classified my 1337 56K as 33.6!

Thats because it tests your upsteam, and 56K modems only SEND at 33.6.
